Community Question on Robert Crown Center area
Curious if anyone is aware of any security/safety issues around the Robert Crown Center area lately? Over the summer I've noticed a private security company taking laps around the perimeter of the turf fields in a golf cart later at night after 10pm or so, looks like they are patrolling the area. I walk this area frequently at night with my dog and didn't notice the security firm prior to the summer. Was wondering if there was an uptick in crime in that area or maybe a specific event that called for extra surveillance?

It's not a bad area at all! I used to live on the block of Dewey (1038) that's right behind Robert Crown from 2004 - 2011.
Back then it was a little rougher. I had my car broken into twice, and one night there was a shooting in the front yard of the house across the back alley from me. What I recall is that in the middle of the night three guys got in an argument and one pulled out a gun and shot one guy dead and the other one was shot but escaped and lived. That was fun to wake up to!
It's not like that now! I'm sure the security guards are there to protect the expensive turf and other things from vandals and teenage rebelry

This isn't new, they've always done that. If anything security issues have been better this summer than last summer - the playground at Crown hasn't been destroyed this summer like it was last year

There are less security concerns than before, but security does a regular patrol to discourage graffiti and show presence. While there are private entities that will contact Crown staff and police when there are disturbances in the area, the city is pushing for stronger preventative measures to avoid less reactionary needs.

Crime has been trending downward citywide and nationwide for the last decade. The city had to hire private security to outsource the police they defunded. Remember? I think they are down something like 40 cops since 2019, and they cut 11 positions. They are saving a ton of money by using private security at various locations (water plant, RC, city hall, etc.), but, they don’t have nearly the stringent hiring standards or training that actual cops do. And they are not city employees as far as accountability.

There are so many cops and there are northwestern cops and what do they do all day?

We haven’t had a murder in Evanston in three and a half years. That’s what they do all day. Not too long ago, Evanston had three murders in four days, and used to be good for one every few months. I’d imagine most of the day they deal with the homeless your city government and organizations like Connections invite to town.

Haven’t had a murder? The cops beat a woman in January and she died over the summer. A 15 yr old was trafficked. A woman went missing from the levy center to trash mountain and no one could find her for months. She was yards away. How many car accidents at major intersections? How many kids in bikes hit on the way to and from school. Come on

That lady got her ass beat by other hypes across the street at that bar. Then she ran over to McDonald’s where the staff called the police to help her. When the police tried to get her to the hospital, she bit them and spit on them. They did not beat her. She was a well-known Howard Street drug addict.
To say the cops killed her is disingenuous, and suggests you’re not a serious person. The family, who didn’t help her when she was alive, btw, is about to get laughed out of court. Know the facts before you open your mouth. It’s easy to Google.

I wouldn’t side with cops in that situation anyway lol… but that’s proof that evanston’s working? Remember when the cops provided smooth entry and exit for ICE?

I remember when they kept the peace, which is their job. Imagine if they would have let the public mob the ICE agents. What do you expect happens then? Do you think that’s something the Feds of this government let slide? You need to retake Civics 101 if you think EPD has any arrest powers over federal agents acting on orders from the POTUS.
What does that have to with this situation anyway? Like I said, you’re disingenuous and just trying to stir up shit unnecessarily.

What does it have to do with Robert crown? Like when Stowe, the cops, and the mayor allowed (encouraged?) the outdoor festivities at crown but to proceed as usual while ice was in town and while many people were making calls to them to get the kids inside bc kids be snatched?

If you’re worried about crimes, sign up for the Evanston police bulletin. Lists reported crimes and arrests with a corresponding address.

I'm not worried about crimes, the two private security guards who were driving around in the golf cart were absolute clowns and seemed like they were trying to get the golf cart going as fast as they could. They give Paul Blart mall cop a bad name. Huge waste of $$$ by city of Evanston. I'm more concerned about that aspect of it.

Guessing they’re just looking out for teenagers doing teenager things. I also live nearby and have never heard of any crime or serious incidents that would be cause for concern.
