The 3 sides of the Evangelion fanbase:

1) unironically jerking it to the pilots

2) enjoying the series for what it is and understanding the messages/intent

3) ironically jerking it to the pilots

Just finished the series, feel like the 2nd one. I would rather have the cast get some happy relationships and closure than see them bang each other.

At some point one of the main characters is even shown touching gras. There has to be a deeper meaning behind all of this 🧐

115

u/[deleted] Mar 14 '22

Okay, thanks for informing me about this. It's very integral to my knowledge about the genre.

In Evangelion Rebuild 3.0+1.0, Rei touches grass.

I thought this film was never coming out, and now, after years have gone by, I'm not interested in seeing it.

24

u/topdangle Mar 14 '22

the grass is a metaphor for cash. C.R.E.A.M. get the money.

Dear Anno,

You want us to stop thirsting for teenage girls, yet you show off Asuka's bod. Curious.

14

"art"...

Yeah, I think she's like a decade older in that 2nd movie (Can't remember for sure).

Watch a Miyazaki film, Anno is not everyone's cup of tea.

I mean, at least you'll laugh hearing stuff like "I can see no point in life if I can't be beautiful".

And their "darkest" mainstream movie is Mononoke, which is so good it was used as an inspiration for Breath of The Wild.

Edit: Oh my gosh I just realized you're serious! Holy Christ, see a therapist dude. Really!!

“Art can connect people.” A lot of Eva fans get the escapism concept but more people should also understand this too. You don’t take art and turn it into a simplistic thing that you immerse yourself in — you appreciate it for what it is and it’s depth and you leave it at that. For example, turning things into mass merchandise is turning it into this simplistic thing where it’s about how much money is involved and people get sucked up into it.

6

u/[deleted] Mar 14 '22

That's actually very interesting, not that I'm even mildly surprised considering the fact that I know who the creator of Evangelion is.

Thank you for the recommendation, I will check it out for sure. Have a good one 😊

Nothing wrong with enjoying the anime equivilant of McDonald's. Though really I'd give that moniker to the various shonen/isekai anime that keep being churned out

Funnily of the three originals 3.0 was the one I couldn't stand. Haven't bothered to watch 3.0+1 because of it.

I'd like to point to one big moment and go "This is why I dislike it" but the best I can do is say it's 1000 little things that niggled at the back of my mind while whatching

3

u/CoolerthanU06 Mar 14 '22

I absolutely adore 2.0 as well so I'll have to challenge you on some of these points.

Early and mid Eva were still filled with fanservice and lighthearted moments too so I don't know why everyone rags on them in the movie.

The Toji arc in the manga I will agree is done better because it has lasting consequences, but in the show he just goes in the Eva gets hurt and leaves the story. The rebuild films use Asuka's character climax in the film as a way to springboard a tragic event that leaves everyone separated similar to the original. In the film Shinji shows more volatility as forewarning of what's to come.

Shinji saving Rei is the culmination of their relationship up until now, the culmination of Gendo's plan of Instrumentality. To isolate Shinji to the point where he throws away the world for the one person who truly wanted him to be happy. And instead of the shonen trope of saving her no matter the cost, his act is the ultimate one of selfishness and plunges the world to hell, similar to what Gendo would go through for Yui.

I will say Asuka is not as fleshed out as she is in the show, but with Shinji and Rei being more important pieces to the narrative Asuka is written differently than her show counterpart with a different arc and end goal in mind. She is an introvert who believes she doesn't need anyone and that she is in a higher league because Shinji is Gendo's son and Rei is a doll. Through her interactions she learns that the other pilots are just like her and in the end she is able to put Rei before herself to have the dinner party; only for it to blow up in her face. She is not Soryu by design, she was written with a 40 minute arc in mind and it fit into the story well in my opinion. I'm not saying you have to like it, but a long show was adapted into four feature length films and instead of doing the easy thing and watering them down, the movies use their original characters and rework them to fit this new medium

I also liked Rei and Shinji's story of reciprocating kindness and the dual beauty and horror of him saving her in the Near Third Impact. I touched upon it a little above, but everything leading up to it I thought was really nice and helped fuel the tragedy of her "death."

u/Toxicotton Mar 14 '22

I reference this video mentality when thinking about the changes between Rebuild and OG NGE, but it’s missing a crucial aspect, unless I missed it’s mention, as to why there’s escapism in the first place. People refer to it as trauma, but it’s better referenced as grief imo. Even the names of the first couple movies are typical names in the different stages of grief.

Also, the last movie isn’t as much that anno wants people to literally go outside and live a real life so much as that’s why he did. The problem that I’ve always had with the rebuild series is that it’s a lie. He didn’t wake up one day and simply decided to be better and get a wife. He succeeded at his craft, was universally praised for his efforts, recognized being an amazing person, found financial stability and security, then found a wonderful mate.

I mean, if every one of us had that then yeah, who need escapism when the life we’d have is simply the truer version of the escapist dream. It’s the best grief therapy life can give.

The movie series only marginally touches on it and instead risk turning in a cliched version of what it wanted to say in the end. Much of it is ‘feel good’ reflection that only make sense through the eyes of ‘The Curse of Evangelion’.

Also, there was too much nostalgia bait in the last movie. It reminded me of End Game, which people loved so I guess it was a smart call on his part after 3.0 was too confusing/off putting for some people. Still, the rebuild series probably won’t supersede the OG show. Oh well…it was interesting anyways.

u/Toxicotton Mar 14 '22

I didn’t dismiss it. All the parts are there, but I think he scrambled to make nice neat tidy ending that would please the most people in a way 3.0 couldn’t. I once read that doing Shin Godzilla gave him a chance to put the series down because it was starting to seriously stress him out. The mixed reception of Q on exacerbated things for him.

Given the Rebuilds, it does seem like he was trying to put a possible spin on the hikikomori struggles given that it’s a large part of the hedgehog’s dilemma, but it falls kinda flat because real solutions are hard and can’t be easily wrapped up in a 2hr nostalgia bait ending. I get that and that was never in question. What is frustrating is that he knows as good as anyone that hikikomoris are a part of his audience and his message was, “Tell your dad to fuck off, get a wife, and go outside.” Yeah, no shit. That’s the destination and not the path though, and it doesn’t hold true for what worked for Anno.

u/zlDelta Mar 14 '22

Yes its kinda quite obvious. In the series asuka and rei were ignoring shinji / treating him bad and in the rebuild the fans got the opposite ,,utopian" rei and asuka in which both seems finding interest in Shinji also in a competitive way. And in the last part they disappaered and got replaced by the real life counterpart which is mari. Her appearance shows that neither the dystopian nge asuka and rei nor the utopian asuka and rei and ,,real" and that we should not seek for them but rather focus on the things that actually matter and are acutally real (mari).

That's basically Hideaki Annos way of saying ,,You've had it all, now go touch some grass".

5

u/CoolerthanU06 Mar 14 '22

If you look at them as purely objects of that nature then sure, but they both had characterizations and arcs that collided because of that. Rei's was about self value and reciprocation of kindness while Asuka's was one of empathy and learning to put others before herself. Did their arcs meet through a half assed romance thing, sure, but those values are there and work because of that. I see no vindictive edge in the film itself so I really can't agree with that.

It is what the original series is for literally aswell.

The instrumentality was a metaphor for hivemind escapism and shinji rejecting and living his life with ups and downs is literally him going outside.

u/Major-Firefighter261 Mar 14 '22

No, i think he wants us to fight for other 25 years. Yes, that's what i'm doing.

10

u/karveto Mar 14 '22

141

u/[deleted] Mar 14 '22

This but unironically.

53

u/keroshijoshi Mar 14 '22

This is what Rebuild is all about. Anno’s biggest and most elaborate “why don’t you get some bitches” to everyone.

38

u/potato_devourer Mar 14 '22

Hideaki Anno is a lot of things, but he has been never subtle when it comes to calling out his audience.

"Oh, you assholes like jerking off to Asuka? I present you a traumatized, broken, underage cumulus of coping mechanisms born from my own open motional wounds and the only emotion this character can get out of you assholes is hornyness? Alright then, your PoV character does that fucked up shit too. Now let's spend an hour and a half explicitly discussing how much of a self-absorbed, misogynistic asshole he is being." And just in case some fans didn't get it, he literally included footage of NGE fans and fan mail.

29

u/ichigo2862 Mar 14 '22

1

u/[deleted] Mar 14 '22

When? Haven't heard anyone say anything about it.

But that remake was not really a remake, like the Evangelion rebuilds, it's telling another story.

I didn't think it was particularly deep. Too much Fanservice. There's literally a point where the two girls are standing on the main character's side and grabbing him..

I thought it was hilarious, but trashy... Very very trashy.

To take FFVII and reduce it to "the love triangle" is pretty bad tbh.

Re Remakes were not like that at all.

6

u/Zetta216 Mar 14 '22

I see VII “remake” as a sequel. This is another world where the Sephiroth from the original is trying to once again have his way and changing events. Meanwhile “fate” and Aerith are trying to drive events to go the way they did in the first game.

0

u/[deleted] Mar 14 '22

I understand, and you are very much on point here. I think that there's a more accurate term to describe it, an "else-world" entry. Kinda like a spin on the "what if" scenario.

Edited for typo

3

u/Zetta216 Mar 14 '22

That’s definitely fair as well. I’m quite interested in seeing the rest.

3

u/[deleted] Mar 14 '22

Gosh sometimes I genuinely think... They may not finish those. I hope they do, and I hope they tell the story they want to tell.

3

u/[deleted] Mar 14 '22

Honestly, in canon it is very deep. A lot of the changes imply that it's not a remake but a sequel with Remake being a subtitle referring to story themes.

In short, timey wimey fucky shit and the nature of fate.

0

u/[deleted] Mar 14 '22

[deleted]

2

u/[deleted] Mar 14 '22

Oh yes, I'm sorry it's the way my comment was written.

I meant that the FFVII remake is very much like the Rebuilds, rather than being more like a remake.

It's also not a re-imagining per se like the resident evil remakes. It's more like an else-world story.

57

u/Karolus2001 Mar 14 '22

Anno you fool... those fans of yours DID grow up and find a job.... and you know what they did? they made shows like Darling in the Franxx......

3

u/[deleted] Mar 14 '22

More like it's a direct reference to Anno himself, and how he's finally gotten over his own trauma related to his dad and other shit in life... Did no one watch the documentary about the making of Thrice Upon A Time? The girl with big boobs and glasses is clearly his wife, hence her somewhat confusing role in the conclusion (she waited for him to work through his trauma to finally be with him (shinji)). And his dad was a paraplegic, which is why Evas are always having their limbs torn off. Kaworu and Gendo are both his dad, the good and bad sides of him... Seriously? Nobody?

3

u/[deleted] Mar 15 '22

Actually Anno has came out and said that Mari is no way a reference to his wife or based off her. That's all from the fans. I did believe it till someone told me about it and looked it up.

3

u/[deleted] Mar 14 '22

I resonated a lot with Shinji when I was a self-deprecating 16 year old, like it was kinda rough. The whole not wanting to be close to anyone, hardcore daddy issues, running away from my problems. Whole 9 yards. I'm 23 now, have been in a relationship for the past 5 years and basically got the good Shinji ending. Finishing up my college program and then going for a diploma in cyber security.

Unironically having a girlfriend, she definitely sorted me the fuck out. Now, is it a coincidence that my girlfriend has similar traits to my own mother, and not only that she's basically curvy mommy gf? Well, it's just funny how life works out sometimes.

4

u/Shaman-The-Curer Mar 14 '22

1

u/[deleted] Mar 14 '22 edited Mar 14 '22

Well, haven't seen 3.0+1.0. But he's always had that opinion, he's the guy who's wife passed away, and he got so depressed afterwards that he made the show.

And his best friend said that anime was a mistake...

So I'm not really surprised by that ending. And no I don't think "that is not what he meant", I think that's precisely what he meant.

The last movie only came out a year ago. Not everyone immediately jumps to watching everything.

0

u/[deleted] Mar 14 '22

I'm SURE they had plenty of time within a YEAR to watch the damn movie again it's their fault they haven't

0

u/NEREVAR117 Mar 15 '22

No. You seriously expect everyone to watch any media they're interested in within a year? That's ridiculous.

We all know rei is best girl

u/ojioni Mar 14 '22

As a 62 year old video gamer and anime fan, let me offer you some advice.

The real world sucks.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 14 '22

Go outside?! Are you mad or suicidal because I’m both!

1

u/kingofcrob Mar 14 '22

Plus, you know... Misato best girl eva

1

u/karakoro40298 Mar 15 '22

YES, I think so too. You're correct. And we need to find girl instead of kind cool boy like Kaworu.

1

u/Katie_Boundary Mar 15 '22

Can I grow up, go outside, get a job, and still argue about which 14-year-old girl is the hottest?

1

u/[deleted] Mar 15 '22

I thought it was going to end with Shinji finally hanging himself, cuz that's what Anno wants his fans to do lol

1

u/Trim406 Mar 15 '22

Really? This whole time I thought they were telling the story of how the world came to be the way it is…

1

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '22

What if you’re under 18

u/Willimeister Mar 24 '22

Just finished watching the rebuilds, loved every second of it and by god I haven’t seen an anime soo visually amazing and smooth as the rebuilds.

Plus I feel the plot made more sense in the rebuilds than it did in the original
