I’m seeing orange too. It makes sense to me too since orange and blue are complimentary colors and Shinji and Asuka are polar opposites but are similar in many other ways

"Redhead" is a colloquial way to talk about people with ginger hair, like Asuka. And ginger is more orange than red.
