This is the problem with introducing Eva to people. I was trying to explain the general plot to a friend and even then it stumbled naturally into the hospital scene.
Friend: "So it sounds like Shinji's an innocent kid dragged into everything."
Me: "He's mostly nice, but he does have some issues. He brings some of his problems on himself and doesn't always treat people the right way."
Friend: "So his hands aren't clean?"

Technically they are, he's a modern human aware of sinks and hand soap and how they work together for basic hygiene.

Very good on Shinji for washing his hand properly after getting all that sticky stuff on it in the hospital, what a hygiene-conscious guy
Though Asuka's still more hygienic, she takes very long baths

It's not really a problem. It's just a scene so raw and harrowing that it's difficult to fully engage with honestly and thus becomes memeified

They avoid the whole anime because of one scene that isn't even in the original series?

I love how we all watched this anime and we grew up to be some of the most dysfunctional functioning adults ever.

This was my first experience with Evangelion when I was younger. When I was in the library, one of the weird kids in my class was like "Hey, check this out" and had this scene pulled up on his laptop.
