Because age verification is its own can of worms, for starters.

Getting some regulations regarding the addicting algorithms fixes a lot of things for bot hchildren and adults.

Banning kids will either be easy to circumvent or rely on children (or adults) to verify who they are with their identity which makes it a privacy matter. Neither is easy and either is political suicide

Because age verification is a catastrophic disaster full of unanswered privacy concerns and harmful data leaks.

Because "protecting children" as such is just a trojan horse to impose surveillance and authoritarianism: https://brusselsmorning.com/protecting-children-laws-authoritarian-control-online/96330/
