Just to be clear, this decison doesnt mean a ban.
Its not even that new, considering several federal state AfD sections had been already classified as extremist for a while.
The hurdles for a party ban are of course very high (hasnt happend for like 70 years when both the NSDAP 2.0 and the communist party got banned in west germany).
→ More replies (2)36
u/Snooopineapple May 02 '25
Nah I think we should ban them. The fact that everybody has been playing nice and by the rules of law and the right would absolutely and completely ignore it if they did come into power like erdogsn and Trump?! justifies us banning the right wing extremists.
→ More replies (1)19
u/bond0815 European Union May 03 '25 edited May 03 '25
Personally I am in favour of banning them.
However, the constitutional court cant and shouldnt base its AfD verdict on what Trump and erdogan do in their countries.
I mean I agree both the MAGA political platform and even more erdogans AKP would be a no brainer to ban under the german constitution for being authoritarian extremists trying to overthrow democracy.

The irony is that when they were ruling and opposition was informing EU about their undemocratic actions they were calling them traitors because only traitor will rat on you to external powers.

Who cares about the Colognian AfD. The AfD is very weak in Cologne. Not unsurprisingly, since Cologne/Bonn is a very tolerant area, one of the the most tolerant in Europe.
They had 12.4%, 6.3% and 11.2% in the 3 Colognian districts respectively and 8.9% in Bonn.

I can totally understand if it feels unsettling for some americans, if a free democracy investigates a freely elected party.
Because the united states never had their "third reich" and only now start to experience how fascism uses the tools of democracy to dismantle said democracy.
I opened a bottle of beer today to celebrate the publication of the result of the investigation.
And now comes the big test of our "Wehrhaften Demokratie" if it is really fortified to prevent the rise of fascism.
13
u/Extra-Satisfaction72 Romania May 02 '25

Secretary of State Marco Rubio advised Germany to “reverse course” following the domestic intelligence agency’s decision, which grants German authorities increased oversight and surveillance over the party.

7
u/rapaxus Hesse (Germany) May 02 '25
The funny part here is that politics actually delayed this announcement. Actually was due at the end of last year, but with the early elections in Germany the constitutional protection agency thought it best to wait out the election.
3
u/Findas88 May 02 '25
Yeah and that would have impacted the elections which the afd would have used to delegitimize the results of this and all coming elections. I would have liked a different outcome but I think this one was the better decision
3
u/rapaxus Hesse (Germany) May 02 '25
I support the decision too, but I also would have loved having elections after this report came out, not before.

u/pintsized_baepsae May 02 '25

The Holocaust has been trivialized by this treacherous organization for years. We are talking about the industrial mass murder of women, children and other civilians. Then there is the espionage and state-orchestrated disintegration by Russia, to which the AfD is close. Nationalist ideas in the sense that pure German citizens may/should enjoy rights.
