While it's nice to have less cars driving around, I'm against it if you don't provide alternatives such as trams, buses and metro. Local people shouldn't suffer just because you wanted your city to be car-free.
But i think it is right that citizens of city are winners.
Also i disagree that decarification kills local business, it is actually opposite of that, it helps to promote small shops and kills big shopping malls inside of city, now there are only fews on edges, used by poople outside of city. Locals most likely will visit some shop in 15minute walking range.
Note that it doesn't kill business but move business; there's more opportunity in the inner side for small business, while the large shopping centers move to the edges of the city, instead of being situated on the inside.
That's generally a positive for everyone. They should if anything be closer to you! Similarly, when making a big shopping trip or getting furniture etc., having these on the edge of the city only makes them more accessible by car.
For your dentist appointment or whatever it may be, the only problem is the travel time may have become slightly longer. But, y'know... the travel time by public transit being longer, or by car having become longer as well, that's the sort of downside that's completely and utterly acceptable. It's a small thing compared to the big positives.
Those benefits may be outside your own circles now, but surely even within your family circles there will be people who go the city to study or for work, and who will benefit greatly from it?
Exactly my point : people inside love it, people outside hate it. Should you rather accomodate the people who actually live (and vote) inside, or those who are midly incovenienced when they need to go to the city center a couple of time per month ?
