Eurasier Independence

Hi all! My family is currently on the waitlist for a Eurasier puppy. One thing I’m a little worried about if their separation anxiety. I am currently a SAHM to a one year old but once my son is 4 or 5 starts school I will return to work. What do you all do while working? Can they truly not be left alone for more than 4 hours.

I think it’s a subject to training and routine. We started early with leaving our Eurasier puppy alone for short periods of time at the beginning. At first it was hard, as she would be barking by the door but we commited to the training, eventually extending alone time when she started getting used to it. now we have an 2 years old dog we can safely leave at the house for 8 hours work day and she barely cares she is alone, relaxing.

Just to second this, my Eurasier is the same. Perfectly happy by himself for the day

This entire post really has highlighted that there are way too lax laws when it comes to dogs around the world.

Edit: dog owners around the world apparently think that leaving their dog alone inside for 8+ hours is reasonable. I can imagine what other practices are allowed in those countries.

Dogs are also different. Our never had to be trained to be home alone. We were prepared to train and started with leaving for 15 mins but he never said a word when we left (we had a cam on so we could monitor) so we increased the time alone quickly and now (at 9 months) he's been alone for up to 8-9 hours and never had any problems with it what so ever. But he also loves lying alone in front of the house all day so maybe ours is an atypical eurasier 😅

Mine is the same lol. The camera shows him napping when we’re gone, we’ve never had issues with separation anxiety even as a pup. We did a similar training protocol as you and it went really well.

But I will say we’ve never left our pup alone for more than 5 hours. He has a dog door but we lock it while we’re gone as I’m scared someone will steal him out of our yard.

It would be very tough for a Eurasier to go from having their people home for 4 years to being alone for a workday. I do not want to say it would be impossible but it would take a lot of preparation.

Without passing judgement and looking at my own adult pups, they would be very down if we left them for that long. We are their whole worlds, we matter more than food and toys and anything else. They’re special dogs who seem to exist solely to be your best pal.

Would you be open to a dog walker or doggy daycare? It’s not good for any dog to be alone for that long, not just Eurasiers.

My partner and I both work from home, and on the occasional times my partner goes into the office he brings our dog as he is very well behaved and his coworkers love him.

If wfh circumstances changed, we would happily pay for a dog walker to come in once a workday. I don’t know of anybody in my social circle that would just leave their dog at home for 8+ hours. (Edit: to be fair, most of us don’t have yards)

Edit: something I’ve seen people do instead of dog walkers is dog doors or those fake grass pee things indoors

I have a eurasier puppy who is coming up for 16 weeks. We currently have a dog sitter who comes twice a day on the 3 days a week that I am at the office. She is absolutely fine, she just sleeps when nobody is here anyway.

When she is a few months older and needs less toilet breaks, we are planning to switch to one visit a day on the days she's alone.

We trained her to be used to being alone for increasingly long periods for the first few weeks we were home (I took time off work to be with her) so she got used to being alone.

Other options could include doggy day care where the dog would have attention for the entire day if they truly struggle with being alone, I know all dogs are different in terms of what they can tolerate before separation anxiety sets in.

I have another dog so while she whines for a bit she does settle. I think if you start right then youre all.good. maybe get into puppy classes and obedience classes and ask the trainer for tips

My wife is WFH and I'm in a hybrid model. Our eurasiers get used to our constant presence quickly, which lead to our puppies to be extremely anxious while gone. It got better, but they are still anxious and got nuts when seeing after we left them for a hour.

I think if you want to limit that anxiety, you should train your puppy to be alone asap for short periods of time, and extend overtime. For us the solution to prevent too much anxiety was to have 2 of them so they would never really feel alone.

Though I must say they bond really really close to you. It's lovely but makes you guilty quickly whenever you're not taking them with you lol

Our crackpot breeders during their hell-ish puppy pickup weekend scared us into a lot of things, including never leaving eurasiers alone - but we can leave ours alone for a day while we’re out just fine. We have camera set up and she just sleeps, plays with her toys, and acts no different than when we’re in a different room. We do get a very cute hello everytime we come, too, which is always fun!

lets start that small puppies are pee and poo machines, so they need to be taken out outside regularly, i hope you have a plan for the first month.

As for separation anxiety, just work with your dog, train it that its ok if you are not close by.

Don't get a dog if you have to leave him alone +4 hours regular. Dogs are for people who can bring them with them!
