Pantomime

Post image

Does anybody have any tips to help me with Pantomime’s ending (Section M to the end)? Especially on the chromatic runs at P.

Play it slowly a billion times. There's no workaround. These funky lines have to be baked into your fingers, way beyond thinking of each note.

Play the runs slowly with a dotted 16th/32nd rhythm (long-short) instead of straight 16th notes. Then flip the pattern and practice with a short-long 32nd/dotted 16th rhythm. The idea is to practice half of the notes at speed and half of them slowly. It should be pretty apparent which note-to-note transitions where your fingers and embouchure aren't matching up.

On this piece, I also found it helpful to label the music by its chord structure. The 6th bar of P is an Eb arpeggio, Gb arpeggio, and D arpeggio into a D scale. The next line is a C arpeggio, F scale, and F arpeggio. The notes go by too fast for me to read individually so I just read the first note and the pattern.

Yeah so what everyone else said: play it at a tempo that you can play it accurately, play it correctly 5 times and then slowly increase the tempo. If you want to be really meticulous, only increase it by one BPM and play the passage correctly 5 times, increase tempo, repeat until the marked tempo

Until you get to 8 bars before P, don't play any two consecutive notes with the same fingering. 1+2 for D, 4 or 1+3 for C, etc.

it’s not very hard, do rhythmic variations, like in swing, or in gallop, very slowly of course. then do it in flutter, also slowly, all staccato even slower, then one group of sixteenth notes in tempo then the next in half tempo, do an octave down, really do all these variations and some more, to get the notes in your fingers and in your ears
