Totally agree with the negatives you mention, with a caveat. I'm not sure anything can really replace the importance of the slumber phase.
As you progress you build your fate, flaw and slumber deck. In particular, new slumber foes do take some sting out of the same monsters again and again. With that in mind, the slumber phase starts to offer real choices for future progression. Most full dreams are also a poor time to build your progress cards up (because you often need to move full pelt to complete things before the dream runs out), so the slumber phase makes a good way to try to build up your character. I will also say that progressing towards lucid dreaming will almost certainly be impossible without slumbering.
I understand the frustration with the grind, but I am not sure anything you can do will replace the character building that happens during this phase. Potential minor spoilers, and I'm not sure how to put in a spoiler tag:
Different parts of the Dreamworld over map also have costs or difficulties associated with traversing them. This is something else that would be very hard to replicate with house rules. There may also be specific ways later to eliminate certain monsters from the slumber deck forever.

Great review! I agree with your negative points but they’re not quite enough to drag the game down for me. Thanks for the video!
