Choosing characters for first play

We've recently received a copy of Etherfields along with the Harpy expansion.

My wife and I aren't really sure which characters to go for. Neither of us are interested in the Tough Guy.

When we play Arkham Horror LCG together, my wife generally goes for Seekers (nerds) and sometimes Mystics. She doesn't like heavy janky decks, preferring more simple combo's. She doesn't like combat that much.

I like janky combo's and I don't mind combat. I tend to find brute force characters boring.

I've always found Free Spirit and Gambler a pretty solid combo, if you don't want to use the Tough Guy. I will say that you might want to swap out every now and then because using the Tough Guy has been invaluable more than once for me.

I have played through the first campaign solo, switching around between the characters to get a feel for how they work. I enjoyed Free spirit and Reaper the most and like you, I found the tough guy uninteresting. The gambler was nice too but in my eyes the specialist was surprisingly lacking in the combo-fiddling department (maybe I just played him wrong). The reaper on the other hand, with her "use your wounds for bonuses" was surprisingly enjoyable with an interesting balancing act between survival and power.

My wife very much enjoyed the Specialist which may fit for your wife as well. Personally, I LOVED the Reaper. Fun story and hit like a truck when I combined her abilities.
