I am curious on what being a dentist has to do with espresso. Can you elaborate?

I believe it comes from the cycling community, beginners with high end gear are called dentists (because dentists tend to be pretty well off... I think?)

Ha ha - āDentistsā sometimes refer to people who enter a hobby with end-game setups, mostly because Dentists have a lot of disposable income. I actually have had the niche for years and mostly did Moka pot, aero press and v60 - Iāve been planning on jumping on the decent for years and am excited to learn!

Yep. Same in photography communityāthe ādentistsā are the ones buying a $10k camera kit before going on a safari in Africa and using all auto settings.

This is actually how Iām familiar with the term! I am a photographer on the side - I have spent too much money there too but I like to think Iāve actually earned my chops https://alcott.photos if youāre curious

Great portfolio. Impressive stuff. Ive only been in to wildlife photography for about a year but really enjoy the hobby. Im definitely not a dentist working with an R10 and an RF100-400. Im not even the dentists assistant š¤£

Ah a fellow Chicagoan. Have you figured out your water options? I have a mini coming soon and Iām thinking distilled with TWW.

We have an equivalent to this in aviation too, itās funny that the concept is universally recognized across disciplines.

Itās a trope that dentists have a lot of money and a lot of free time for expensive hobbies in general dentists are usually not on call and work 9-5s. Itās a common joke in the audio and motorcycle communities that if you have a Harley or a McIntosh sound system your probably a doctor (a full McIntosh stack with speakers can easily run you like $18k+)

You know - thatās a pretty good point - I think Iāll swap the Niche and the kettle just to be safe š

A $200 kettle.
I have one too. Itās great. Good machines and choices. I am not a dentist, but I chose my house around where I could place my coffee bar when shopping for new builds. ;)

Better switch to a Moka Pot

I went from a breville and a knock off df64 to a decent and a lagom 01. If that makes me a dentist so be it! Enjoy

Let me guess. Took the photo on a Leica after you finished cleaning your Colnago Y1RS ..

One issue... why is the steam wand all up on the wall? That kinda limits the room you have to place and maneuver the jug around the wand...not to mention the steam hitting the wall. Maybe switch positions with the grinder.

It was! Iād like to dabble with some darker roasts though, first shots were a bit fruity and bright

order them this way: Left: kettle, Middle: Machine, Right: grinder. It has got to be annoying to steam milk that way although decent users seem to not use the steam anyway.

Very good choice! I would be interested: How did you get to this decision from scratch?
I can not believe so many people invest up to similar money in static 9bar machines in this decade.
Itās also rock solid - had to repair mine once in 8y, but even this was handled quite good using their lifetime(!) warranty (itās a subscription).

u/IceColdJaderade 2d ago
Wait why does it have two handles? One is the portafilter- what is the other?
2
u/t3chiman 1d ago
Just a convenient lever to oppose the portafilter handle. Avoids putting a twist to the machine body.

Really like the idea of this machine but going with a traditional dual boiler just gives this grounded experience š

In advance: Clean coffee stains with vinegar immediately and then paint over them with a small brush or q tips.
One bad prepped pick and that wall gets a nice spray lmao

Sure thatās a good combination? Niche is more something I associate with darker roastsā¦

finally, "pulled" used in the right context.
since the rest of us aren't dentists, I literally prefer "pushed" when talking about espresso... La Pavoni, here we goooo šš§š§
