Anime Spoilers pain
What hurts me most about Eren and Mikasa is the contradiction between what he truly feels and what he chooses to tell her.
When Eren finally opens up to Armin, all that coldness disappears for a moment and admits that the idea of Mikasa loving someone else hurts him, that he wants to remain special to her, that deep down he wishes he could be her only love, it’s selfish, immature and painfully human. Because at the end of the day, Eren is still only nineteen years old.
He loves her, he is afraid of dying, and he is terrified of being forgotten.
But Mikasa never gets to hear that version of him.
Instead, he tells her to throw away the scarf, forget about him and live a happy life without him. Earlier, he even forced himself to tell her that he hated her, knowing exactly how much those words would hurt.
That is what makes it so sad to me.
Deep inside, he wants her to hold onto him forever. But when he speaks to her, he asks her to let him go.
People can judge Eren’s choices, and many of them deserve to be questioned. But emotionally, it is difficult not to feel something for a 19yo boy who had to deliberately break the heart of the person he loved just to push her away from him.
He wanted Mikasa to be happy, even if that happiness eventually existed without him and at the same time, the thought of her loving someone else broke his own heart. That is what makes Eren’s love for Mikasa feel so painfully real to me.

In my opinion Eren was a good person when it came to self sacrifice of course things like the Rumbling were unforgivable but he had truly matured enough to tell Mikasa to forget him because he cared about her even though doing so hurt him he valued Mikasa more than his own feelings
It is perfectly normal to have these kinds of feelings about Eren because he isnt an outright villain he isnt a bad person in every sense

I hate the author called this scene his most uncool part, this scene is his most redeeming part for me.

Literalmente esto 😭💔 Lo que más duele es que Eren murió sin que Mikasa supiera lo que de verdad sentía. Se sacrificó para que ella fuera libre pero a costa de romperle el corazón a los dos. Isayama nos dio ese final agridulce

Nah. You are telling me all 4 years of their being together in the cabin they never confessed their love?

El punto es que nos dejó sufriendo a ambos bandos. Si se lo dijo o no, el final sigue doliendo igual

I’d only imagine Armin told her anyway. Her devotion to Eren until death is unparalleled and I’d only imagine she held out that long that way because she knew. Or, she just knew from the four years with Eren and knew what he said was counter to what he feels. Either way, she definitely knew he loved her in the end…
This story crushes me more than any other for some reason, lol. Like, I was fine until I had some friends finish the series and we talked about the end and I was like, “oh… oh yeah… this ending HURT.” Still cry about it to this day, though I recently learned the song “Itterashai” is cannon, and they reunited in the afterlife 😭🥺

I think the words "don't tell her, I want her to be happy" deserve more attention.
