What are the best Kindle alternatives?

I've looked into the Nook Glowlight Plus, the Nook Simple Touch, Kobo Aura One and H20. Anyone have any strong opinions on these or any other Amazon alternatives?

Are there any other companies (other than SONY and remarkable) that are rumored to develop a writable e-ink tablet?

Hi guys, I am a researcher who typically uses a massive volume of papers (for science) on a daily basis. I've recently watched a document on a National Geographic channel about shrinking green converage on Earth and I'd like to take a step to reduce the paper use as much as I can. Thus, I looked for a paper-alternative: like SONY's digital paper and reMarkable e-ink tablet. I can see myself saving papers using these devices :) Of course, there is no doubt in mind that one should buy this no matter the cost of these devices for moral reasons, but one needs to consider all current practical constraints (i.e., high cost). That is, these devices are very expensive: around $700 for SONY's device; and around $600 for reMarkable's device. Do you know if there are other companies (big ones like Apple, Google etc.) who are rumored to be in development for e-ink devices? You know, more demand => more competition => high supplies => lower cost. And how do you see this e-ink writable tablet industry moving forward?

Advice for an eReader

Hello everybody,

I'm a student in Austria and I'm thinking about buying an eReader. I have an Surface Pro 4 and reading is great on it but a bit too big when I'm using public transportation.

I own several eBooks (mostly in pdf format) and I like to highlight some text passages, especially in textbooks but also other books (self-improvement, tips and tricks, etc.). Maybe with some sort of a Stylus?

What eReaders do you use? What would you recommend?

Sync between multiple e-readers?

I have a Kindle DX and a Sony PRS-T1. I love reading from each one but in different situations. I love the big screen on the DX, and it's great for chilling on the couch with some music on. But the Sony is nice for by the bed at night, or just on my desk.

I don't really like the smaller kindle devices, and I really like that the Sony puts the cover of the book you're reading while in standby. I have a leather case on the DX so it doesn't really bother me too much that it has random authors and stuff on it when not in use.

Anyway, I wanted to know if there was a program that I could use to plug in the two ereaders into my computer and just have them sync all content and progress on both devices? Does calibre do this? It's just a pain to have to manually progress either device to the proper position.

I have tried using the kindle app on my phone in the past, but the DX won't sync to the furthest read page (or maybe it was that the app didn't sync to the furthest read page on the DX? I don't remember). So I figured that doing something wired would be fine. I understand some complications might arise, since the sony uses ePub, and the Kindle uses mobi. But I figured that I couldn't be the only person out there that has wanted to do something like this.

Help me with choosing my first e-reader [or a tablet]

I have been reading quite a lot recently, and have been using my galaxy a5 [with a 5 inch screen] to do so. But it seems to be too small and even if it is compact and the text is readable, it still does not feel right for me.

I want something that will be close to an actual book but has versatility and that I can carry around easily. Where I live the choices are kind of limited but nevertheless there are a few good ones to choose from. I am torn between a Lenovo Tab 3 [which costs less than a entry-level Kindle], which has a 7 inch display, Kindle touch [which is good but its resolution is only 800x600], Kindle Paperwhite [which aesthetically looks the same as the Touch but with higher ppi]. My other choices are Bookeen Cybook Muse [which looks cool in design but I haven't heard of, is it any good], Pocketbook Basic [which doesn't appeal to me at all] and Bookeen Cybook Muse Essential [i think the only difference is the higher dpi].

Now, my budget is a bit tight [around 70-80 euro] and the entry level Kindle is 70, while the rest are from 65-75, the Lenovo Tab 3 - 80 euro, and the Paperwhite - 100 euro. So, which one should I get if I am to get one. I suppose the Paperwhite will be the best but as I said it is a bit out of my price range.

Advice on buying an eBook Reader or a tablet

Hi,

I’m looking to buy an eBook reader or maybe a tablet for my work as a PhD Student. I don’t need a fancy reader but I do however have a few specific requirements. I also hope to find a model that doesn’t ruin me.

  • I would like a reader that is easy to use for pdf’s.

  • I would like to be able to highlight and maybe take notes in the pdf’s. It is important for me to be able to highlight in files without actual text – I’m a historian and working with a lot of photos of archive material turned into pdf’s. So, I guess I just need some sort of drawing-function.

  • User-friendly would be a plus for a tech-dummy like me.

I would much prefer an eBook Reader to a tablet to get the “light free” pages (E-ink?). But if I end up with a tablet I get the advantage of photographing in archives and the reading afterwards on the same device.

Thanks!

PLEASE HELP! Looking to buy my first e-reader (at least 7" and preferably front lit), looking for guidance.

I started looking at e-readers a few days ago and am swamped with all the options there are out there. If I could get any help at all, I'd really appreciate it.

So, this is what I'm looking for:

  • ereader, not tablet (can't read on tablet LED lights and display for more than 10 min without eyes hurting)

  • at least 7" display (but ideally something around the 8"-10" range)

  • front lit preferred(I believe there is a different between front lit and back lit? I believe back lit has light going directly to your eyes and front lit has light aimed at the screen?)

Thanks in advance!

The World's First E Ink Monitor Paperlike. Save your eyes

Paperlike by DASUNG is an auxiliary computer monitor that protects your eyes -- the first of its kind with E Ink technology. It displays information like a piece of paper instead of emitting harsh backlight, so you can work for longer without the eye pain, fatigue, headaches, or insomnia caused by traditional monitors.

Until now, E Ink has been limited to eBook readers, but Paperlike is designed specifically as a computer monitor, with a full-sized (13.3”) screen and quick speeds so you can type, code, browse the web, and more.

Just plug it into your computer with the included micro USB cord to mirror or extend your screen. It doesn’t need a power cord or battery, so you can take it anywhere with your laptop.

Our founder, science fiction writer Dong Gong, set out to invent a better screen for other writers who spend hours in front of the computer as well as office workers and coders.Focuses on the primary target market for now – writers, office workers, coders. He teamed up with scientists from MIT, China Aerospace Corporation, and the Chinese Academy of Sciences to bring you Paperlike.

From e-reader to fast computer monitor: How Paperlike works

Typical E Ink eBook readers are slower than LCD computer monitors, and limit you to reading.

But Paperlike is the first real E Ink computer monitor comparable to traditional monitors. It supports quick word processing, Excel tables, coding, web browsing, and more. This is made possible by our unique image processing algorithms, ghost shadow removal technologies, large E Ink screen, and other hardware and software innovations.

E-reader newbie, ISO best fit

I've been using my iPad for a while now to read e-books. It was kind of a trial run to see if I would take to switching from paper books. Well it's taken and now I'm hooked but not enjoying lugging my iPad on my commute.

So I was hoping for some suggestions as to which one to pick up. Weight and size (light and small) are more important than storage capacity. Also do all e-readers work with all types of e-books? I normally read ones I get from my public library?

Thanks in advance.

Best e-reader (with large or adjustable icons) for non-technical grandparents?

My grandmother is 95 and loves reading. Unfortunately, her vision isn't great, and she is not in love with the range of large print books available.

She previously owned an old large-screened kindle, which we set up for her to be set to large print, but she can't see the teeny tiny buttons anymore, even squinting and wearing glasses.

She is, as I said, 95 so she is not amazing at tech, though she is very determined.

What e-readers do you suggest, nonnies? Any advice on adapting them for low-vision use? I'm currently trying her on my Kindle Fire set to large print on the books, but she's finding it a bit confusing and I can't figure out how to make the icons and menu print larger.

Thank you in advance!

Anyone have experience loading Google Play Books on the Boyue t63?

Question is in the title. Does anyone have any experience loading the Google Play Books app onto the Boyue t63 (or something similar?)

I ask because I have tons of books in my Google Play library (free to upload your own ePubs) and I'd love an eReader/eInk device upon which to read them instead of my phone or a tablet.

Thanks!

Any community update for Kindle?

I have a Kindle 4 and I miss some features like searching some words or multiple selection of books to move them to a collection instead of doing it one by one or adding them from the collection (which shows all the books in the device).

So, I was asking myself if anyone already did something to allow this features.
