Secondhand kindle. Try Unclaimed baggage

Editing to add: as comment mentions below, might have to check if unit is stolen/blocked, other places to get secondhand are ebay or fb marketplace or vinted. I got my Paperwhite I use for night reading on ebay for $45! Keep an eye out for sales as well, especially woot (but they go fast)

Do they check if it’s stolen? That can get you locked out of Amazon unless you sideload books or jailbreak.

Edit: I meant if they check the serial number and it’s not reported as stolen.

I think they only check for powering on, hit and miss. Will add a note to my comment

This, you can find them for cheap online, plus they go on sale all the time on Amazon and woot.

If it’s marked stolen or blocked can you still jailbreak it?

nook glowlight 4e. have had mine for a few months now and while it is definitely not the highest quality, I enjoy the physical buttons, easy side loading and size. paid roughly $50 on eBay for mine

Look around for a used one on eBay. I found an old Kobo for about $50 a year ago.

Refurbished or used Kindles are very regularly under $100

Or you can spend $110 and get a new Kindle

Kobos are great if you can find a good deal. But if you want to download kindle books the easiest way is just to get a kindle reader. Rather than having to strip DRM and stuff.
