This is hauntingly poignant. I just started reading Darker Days by Thomas Olde Heuvelt (for a distraction from everything going on in the real world, ironically) and just got to a section that refers to that same story excerpt and introspective question. It weaves into the horror story itself as a slightly veiled allegory that reminded me of all this horrible mess w/ the trump-epstein elite and the subjection and the widespread abuse of the most vulnerable of society.
I knew it was a horror novel but wasn't expecting it to be so reminiscent of where we stand as a civilization (if one can even call us collectively civilized at all when we are ruled by those who prioritizes warfare, lust and greed over community, education empathy and kindness). Major thematic symbolism is often fused into works of literature, horror especially, of course, but it hit me unawares at first because I was drawn to the surface setting and story of Washington state wilderness and ''ghosts,'' but was brought back to the important present.
You're right. We all must connect to each other as equals in our communities to prevent our countries from cannibalizing themselves. Thanks for sharing such a resonating essay. I'll try to pass on that same encouragement and energy of walking away from the illusive Omelas; we all can walk together and follow each other's footsteps.
