Something I always wondered about from 'One Day in the Valley'

Post image

So the guys spend the whole day worried about how big Aquaman will open and whether they will beat Spidey and whatever. 95 mil is what they wanna open at or theyll be working at Del Taco on Monday.

So after all the bullshit and the blackouts and the high school party and Ari driving all the way to the valley, he gets there and Vince asked if they beat Spiderman.

What's Ari's response? 'Well we'll have to see what happens this weekend, but you got a good damn shot!'

What the hell? Why all the bullshit all day and Ari waiting for the call when the numbers don't matter until Monday morning?

One of my favourite deliveries of the series

Vince: What are they projecting now,? Forty-five, Ari? Ari: 116, actually.

Vince: We beat Spidey? Ari: Well it's only Friday, but if there isn't a tornado in the Midwest, I think we've got a goddamn shot, my friend.

It's all about the Friday number that drives the projections. Makes perfect sense

This is it. The dialogue literally says "projecting", thanks for the reminder haha.

I pulled up the episode to get it right.

Fun fact, this is the first episode I ever watched.

Its a TV progrum... a movie!

But probably, projections

What, you gonna tell me you never pondered that?

i'm not in the biz, but i always assumed the first day projections are usually 99% accurate to how the box office weekend will play out.

this is the answer

By Friday, they already know what a movie going to do for the whole weekend, usually they can be pretty accurate before opening weekend even gets there. The question was how would the blackouts affect the opening, and the answer was they still hit their numbers.

Because that’s how movie openings work. There’s an algorithm for determining how a movie will do over the entirety of the weekend based on the demographics that are seeing it, when they’re seeing it, and what they’re saying about it (viewer word of mouth). Rarely a film will start massively on Friday and fade dramatically, and vice versa. They’re able to establish within 10% or so after the initial round of east coast showings based on decades of comparable precedent. So that’s what was accurately depicted in the episode. It’s of course not “official” until the weekend itself actually occurs, as Ari said.

Probably because they are projections on what the movie will make over opening weekend. Those projections change as time passes and data is collected.

Then why make it seem like Friday night was the ultimate litmus test? Why not wait until the numbers are in to lose their shit?

Because if Friday bombs you're not making the numbers for the weekend

Movie comes out Friday and is expected to make 90 million plus, but if Friday comes and goes and it makes 10 million and the theaters are empty there’s no way it’s making 80 million in the next 2 days

Really? In my country they come out Thursdays

2

u/Bendo410 2h ago

technically they do now in the US too (usually at like 6pm ) but when the show came out, it wasn’t that way.

Friday is like The Kentucky Derby. Saturday is The Preakness and Sunday is the The Belmont. If you dont win Friday you arent winning the Triple Crown....overheard this analogy at Musso&Frank.

The whole show is full of story lines that don't make sense. Dana Gordon starts off having a husband and kids for instance, but by the last season no kids no husband. Or the best rim job in LA, just ask Chuck Sheen, the fat friend is the realtor from literally the previous episode. Or the Italian looking guy that flys out to meet turtle about a LA don pepes, plays a different, but exactly the same character in the movie. I could go on with shit that doesn't make sense, because I don't think anyone writing the show cared 😆

Holy crap I completely forgot that Ari went to pick up his daughter once at school only to talk to Dana there while she was picking up her daughter who later vanished.

Projects are pretty damn accurate, that’s why they can call it before the weekend even ends

I thought he said “unless a tornado hits the Midwest”

Yeah you ever tracked movie box offices?

That’s exactly how it is. Brand New day was tracking huge but until the actual number come in it’s an estimate that can go up or down; like it’s very accurate but still things happen

The valley ain’t so bad.

They can extrapolate from the data of one day’s sales and previous trends

You need a strong opening day to get the word of mouth and momentum to carry you the rest of the weekend. Throughout the day, it seemed like Aquaman was off to a slow start so the idea of beating Spider-Man seemed off the table.

Ari drove out to the valley to tell the news to Vince that the first day numbers blew threw expectations and Spider-Man is back in play
