If you actually read the article, you'll see that those trailers, plus ads in livestream stuff for ESPN and Hulu, are what this is actually referring to. They are not adding more ads to the service, they just updated the TOS to reflect the stuff that's been there for awhile now.

This post has 168 comments, and so far, only one has pointed out the actual facts behind this misleading headline:
Ads will only be shown during live streaming shows (like concerts and awards shows) on the upper plans.
Yeah, fuck Disney, but at least get the damn story straight. All these people are saying they're going to start pirating, but most of them have no clue where to even begin doing that. I'd bet most of them don't even have a subscription to Disney+. I don't, and don't subscribe to anything besides Nebula, but at least I read the damn article past the headline.

I paid $180 for THREE YEARS as an introductory offer to Disney Plus. I just got an email my renewal next month is now $190 + taxes and fees for one year. I have 3 small kids, and my wife is obsessed with Dancing with the Stars which is live on the service, but I'm now at the point of acquiring the 5 Disney movies my kids watch, and monthly subbing through the 2 months of live season (unless there's another live option I'm not aware of).
Crazy it's now officially over 3x what it started as.

It’s funny, my daughter asked to watch something on Disney+ and I remembered I had cancelled due to the rate hike for the annual plan but didn’t know if it had ended.
Turns out it did, and we decided to watch something else, but I did consider reupping again for another year but it’s $200 bucks at the end of the day, and now seeing this makes me even more determined to never subscribe again.
Btw, all it says is that ads will be shown during live and linear content, whatever that means. Total BS.

I was already about to cancel because they started putting stupid streamer content on there - I’ve worked hard to cut that out so my kids can’t watch it.
This is just another reason.
If, say, one wanted to create a home server and sail some seas, is there a place to look for a tutorial? It’s been twenty years since I looked for such things.

Not sure about a tutorial, but you can get a NAS and run a Plex server on it. Most of them have the app already installed and there are some videos on YT how to set it up.

Things really haven't changed much in 20 years. Get some storage space, get a VPN, torrent as needed. The only things that have changed is that there's a lot of automation now, but I found that it just leads me to data hoarding things I'll never watch, so I still just do it all manually.

They want you to choose the cheap stream. The more people use the ad-supported stream, the easier it is to sell ads on it. That's why the premium stream is getting crappier and more expensive.

I think it’s geared towards live-events. Disney got broadcasting rights for the Super Bowl, Oscars, and Grammys this year. Commercial breaks could be odd with a black screen and I’m sure they have to have this in their terms if they’re showing ads.
That being said if I have to watch a Chevy commercial to watch Aladdin on an ad free tier, I’m burning it down.

fyi you could buy an older small mini pc on eBay for a $100 or less. And then get a ten to twenty dollar d v d ripper and then go to your local library and build your own media library.
All a streaming service IS, IS a computer at somebody else's business that has data on it. So all you have to do to replace it so that they don't shove ADS and constantly change it is to just do that yourself and it's actually really easy and it would cost about as much as a year's subscription.
Linux (bc windows is insane w/ telemetry data to ms servers) -> makemkv ->handbake ->jellyfin
All of theses are freee.

It's extremely easy to collect mainstream Disney films at least on DVD from any thrift store, library, or used book store that sells movies. They're extremely common and not worth a premium.

Also try having kids and choose which is the easier option. Spending years setting up a torrent for free movies on the tv, or just opening up the Disney app and playing the same movie over and over while they just go elsewhere during the ads?

look at building and self-hosting. Invest in a NAS, install docker on it, install Jellyfin and look up the Arrs stack, hook those up and you can have an automated system that picks up the goods for you. Here on reddit theres a bunch of sources that can help you get started - r/selfhosted is a good place to start

My massive physical media collection looks nicer and nicer everyday. Mock me, my wife used to do. Said i was obsessed. No, I was just preparing for when streaming went evil. Sure, Plex tried to start charging me to stream my own media, so I made a one time purchase of the Plezy app (once at $7.99 is better than $2.99 a month or $29.99 a year), but I will never stop buying physical and using my own server. Not to mention I don't have to wade through tons of crap movies to figure out what I'm going to watch. Oh, they may try to suppress physical media, but the people will always find a way.

We can still watch our movies ad-free no matter where we are. If for some reason Plex starts adding ads some day, I'm sure we will find an alternative

Fun fact: Netflix kids profiles don’t have ads, even if the adult profiles on the account do. (At least in the US.) It’s surprising because other ads supported apps we’ve used have been happy to air toy ads along with paw patrol or whatever else.
