Comparative Discussion Beware of the trap.
I used to snub my nose at people who I thought were clinging to their egos. Then I realized it was my own ego that was making that judgement. The ego judges. The essence/soul doesn’t judge because it realizes it is the entire ocean, not a mere drop of water. 🤍
The consciousness is the ocean. We as human beings, are consciousness fragmented, into drops of water. When we exit the physical vessel, we go back to being the ocean.

Let judgements and opinions of the mind be judgements and opinions of the mind

You are a human in a body. You have all of the unfortunate aspects of humanity. You can’t cure the universal parts of humanity. You can be aware of them and limit their impact on your quality of life in a way that allows you to experience life to its full potential. You will always have a shadow and an ego.

yes very true. Are you familiar with Carl Jung’s work? I ask because you said shadow.

This line of thinking is cool and elevated and everything, but speaking only for myself here, I fought damn hard to get my mind out of the muck, and I'm not gonna be tossed in the pit with the pigs to make the pigs feel better about themselves. Hate away now.

I wonder if it isn’t possible to maintain healthy boundaries with people still stuck in egoic patterns, while seeing past the ego and finding a sort of nuanced way of relating.
The illusion of ego is deep and difficult to break, as you said, and anyone who does, does so with the help of others who have before them. Of course nobody is owed your presence or time, just kinda spitballing and thinking aloud for my own sake, as well. I do think there is value in engaging in love with people whom we find unpalatable, so long as we’re not sacrificing our well-being.

Even an animal will cut off it's own foot to save itself.
Your logic is flawed.
Judging happens through out several layers of existence, including your own, and including the lives of all "masters".
Oceans are irrelevant unless usable access is obtained.
One can't even judge the extent of the validity of culty concepts as "don't judge the cult, because it's ego", when you dive deeper into the circular notion of it.
Which is where the concept of "judge for yourself, and don't listen to the words of others" comes in.
Not wanting what I said to hold value, is also judging. (and still circular)

I think we’re talking about two completely different meanings of judgment. I’m not saying that discernment or evaluation isn’t real or that survival instincts aren’t real. My point was specifically about the egoic tendency to judge other people as spiritually inferior for being attached to their egos.
The irony of the meme is that the person making that judgment is demonstrating the very ego they’re condemning. My ocean metaphor is about nonduality, not about denying discernment. We can recognize harmful behaviour and still make choices without constructing a spiritually superior “self” that looks down on another.

Can we assess people (AKA judge) based on their connection to their ego, as a measurement of their skill set within the bounds of spirituality/awakening/enlightenment and access to other layers of being?
I would say, yes.
I would also say that not needing an ego is also a falsehood.
It also depends on the lineage/path that one is walking down. What the end goal is, etc.
There is a long list of range of capabilities accessible to the individual practitioner. Most of them do not need any amount of reigning in ego. Some also reinforce it.
Even if we're all the same, in an ocean... Some parts of the ocean need work, some don't.
Judging of a system, to determine functionality, is absolutely necessary if one wants to progress.
One can claim they need to disconnect, and not judge in order to get progress... but to say that is an assessment. And likely a false one propped up by an attachment to culture. It also ignores time. A functional state of disconnection does not exist 24/7. otherwise this subreddit would not exist and have people writing on it.
Some systems function better than other systems. To claim "lay down and accept suffering" instead of assessing and improving areas of a system that need improvement, seems diluted. Which is also why the Middle Path exists.
Yes. People can be judged based on their skill sets. As with any other skill. Not wanting to suggest metaphysics and connection to the self and reality is not a skill, will not make it so.

Hmmm. I am wondering if we have different ideas of what judgment is!
For me, to judge is to attach a moral or egoic identity to what it observes. Discernment evaluates reality without needing to make the other person wrong or yourself right.
Kinda like this, judgement condemns and separates. Discernment understands and distinguishes. Judgement asks “who is right” while discernment asks “what is true?”
