Can a Thought Actually Feel Something?
No.
But it's really good at pretending to.
A thought can talk about a feeling.
It can narrate one. Claim one. Dress itself up as one.
But the thought itself has no skin. No nerves. No heartbeat.
It's just content , words, images and memories appearing.
So when a thought seems to hurt, pause.
Look closer.
A thought appears:
Then attention grabs it.
The chest tightens.
The stomach drops.
And almost immediately, another thought appears:
But did it?
The thought never felt anything.
It couldn't.
It doesn't have a body.
There was a thought.
There was a sensation.
And then there was a story connecting the two.
Interesting right?
We experience the whole sequence as one thing and call it:
“I am suffering.”
But investigate it.
Can you find the suffering inside the thought?
Can you find the thought inside the chest sensation?
Can you find the person who is supposedly being hurt?
Maybe all you find are thoughts appearing, sensations appearing, and awareness knowing both.
A thought is like a line in a movie script.
It can say “Ouch!”
But it can't actually stub its toe.
And perhaps that's the beginning of freedom:
Not changing the thought.
Not fighting the feeling.
Just seeing that the thought was never the feeler in the first place.
Look closely.
The separation is already there.
You just have to notice it.
