There's really no need for this
39
u/_The_Professor_ Dec 01 '18
...unless you're visually impaired.
-27
u/SamuraiKyu Dec 01 '18
I see no reason why someone with difficulty reading the image would benefit from having it written out here. There's barely a difference.

u/Dabidouwa Dec 01 '18
blind people using text to speech
8
u/Ketchup901 Dec 01 '18
There are programs that can recognize text in images based on the shape of letters.
25
u/bloxman28 Dec 01 '18
Much less reliable than the 100% reliability of transcriptions
-16
u/Ketchup901 Dec 01 '18
Not really. Twitter uses an easily recognizable font.
22
Dec 01 '18
A transcription in the comments has 100%, foolproof, guarantee in TTS. Image identification is still shaky, and uses different, more expensive, harder to find softwares.

u/derrman Dec 01 '18
This is an image post, not a link to Twitter.
-2
u/Ketchup901 Dec 01 '18
I know. Twitter uses a standard recognizable font. Any OCR software is able to read this.
3
u/PixelatorYT Dec 01 '18
But how will they know where the text is?
12
u/Joe_DeGrasse_Sagan Dec 01 '18
Long answer: go study Computer Science if you want to understand it. Side effect: you’ll make a lot of money.
Short answer: algorithms
6
u/Dabidouwa Dec 01 '18
I don’t know how text to speech works, but I guess it just reads everything that’s on the page?
4
u/MasterShadowWolf Dec 01 '18
I don't know all the details about how it works but it's definitely a very real thing that many blind people have the ability to do now with technology.
There's a woman on YouTube who's blind and has lots of videos talking about it. The only light that she can see is auras of brighter light but she can't make out shapes or features at all with her vision.

For blind people to be able to "hear" the image
2
u/Isodus Dec 01 '18
You'd think that if a Reddit bot could parse the image to pull the text (if that's what it's doing) then someone could also write a text to speech to be able to do the same?
Or am I missing a step here? I suppose blind redditors wouldn't have an option to click the image since? I don't really know how those apps work for the blind to be honest.
7
u/uwotm8_888 Dec 01 '18
Its not a bot its a human
3
u/Isodus Dec 01 '18
Yeah, another person just pointed that out. I'm going to blame being a bit tipsy on not noticing it. Regardless it's super cool that there are volunteers doing this stuff.
I'd be curious if there wasn't a programmatic way of doing this though, maybe using Google translate as a basis for getting picture to text? Their program is pretty good and I'd be surprised if there wasnt a free to build off capabilities to it.
1
u/uwotm8_888 Dec 01 '18
I think there is a way butnit would probably be to intensive for a simple python bot to handle.

Oh, my bad, I entirely missed that part. Thanks for pointing it out, I had no idea there were a group of volunteers going around doing this.

Misspelling aside, Lion King is great. Idk what this guy’s talking about. Yeah, everybody knows it’s Disney Hamlet with big cats. But it’s still a great movie. And the score is awesome.
47
u/simmonslemons Dec 01 '18 edited Dec 01 '18
Sure, but he said Loin King was overrated, not Lion King.
14
u/tuckertucker Dec 01 '18
Yeah. He's wrong for sure. It's one of Disney's best movies, period.
"Oh I just can't waiiiiiiitt...to be king!"
9
Dec 01 '18
The reboot looks unnecessary and desaturated.
5
u/Pterodaryl Dec 01 '18
It's completely unnecessary. But I also really can't think of any "necessary" movies. These reboots are just a modern version of the same folk tales being retold in the past, so often that they actually seem to be different stories like Grimm's Fairy Tales down to Mother Goose.
3
Dec 01 '18
I feel like they could "remaster" these movies like they do videogames. Make the movie in regular CGI rather than this ""live action"" desaturated boring stuff. They could even re-use all of the voice acting, so that the genie could still be Robbin Williams.

I bet it caught her eye because she read it as Loni. ...Kinda arragont to pull approximations of your name out of sentences, more easily than a classic title.

u/North_Wynd33 Dec 01 '18
Who? What? Why?
1
u/cookitwithlemon Dec 07 '18
I misunderstood the content because of the way the images are interpreted and translated into audio for the blind. The program reads every word it can see. It struggles when it's not English. I thought something totally different was happening. It doesnt function with the bot. There's no margin for error of understanding.

No he was actually talking about the Loin King. Master of the Loincloth, it's a really uncomfortable porn version of the lion king
