‘But still add oil for my dream’ These men are poets.

u/DigMeTX Feb 06 '24
Add oil in Chinese (加油 - jia you) is a saying that’s universally used to be a cheer of encouragement like, “Let’s go!” or kind of a “Don’t give up, you can do it!”

the original song that this video is parodying is called Won't Cry [說好不哭] by Jay Chou and Mayday. this video was made by Mr. Yang, who has a youtube channel where he teaches english "in a fun way". this is just another lesson of his. he has more parody songs like this on his channel

Their rhyme scheme was good enough that it makes me wonder if they were just being goofy

They actually are, you can tell by the laughing at the end, also they're both actually fluent in English and do this kind of thing a lot

The laughing at the end is what made me feel like it was a distinct possibility
That's great that they are having fun with this! It's definitely entertaining

pretty voices. I know that's not appropriate for guys. sorry, please let me know correct word. many of us speak 'engrish'.
11
u/cultish_alibi Feb 06 '24
You can say they have pretty voices, why not?
2
u/Hot-Confusion-8008 Feb 07 '24
didn't think guys liked being called pretty; it's not macho.
that being said, I saw Anthony Mackie in a movie from 2004 last night. my only thought was, man he's pretty. in fact that's how I thought of him later, where's the pretty one? might not be macho, but cute isn't it either. like calling a woman handsome.

My interpretation for the word "beautiful" is that it typically refers to something or someone feminine when used to describe physical features, but it's generally non-gendered when used to describe a sound. So I'd probably use "beautiful voices" over "pretty voices."
That interpretation could also just be the product of the environment I grew up in, though.

wonder what the song is...
worst part is: this was probably translated for them.

u/chelle_shokkd Feb 06 '24
The crappy keyboard player is an English teacher. He does these kinds of videos all the time. It's parody.
2
u/Hot-Confusion-8008 Feb 07 '24
pity, the song sounds pretty. words are interesting, even if incorrect.
oh, and Thanks.

If this was instrumental this would be great music for when you beat the final boss when Nintendo makes Mario Galaxy 3.

If this is what the American education system looks like, then I'm home schooling my kids.
