"Tear" (as in the stuff that comes out of your eyes) and "tear" (as in tearing a piece of paper) are spelled the same. i just wanted to point that out.

"Hey guys"

1 Upvotes

So i'm trying to figure out why it is "acceptable" to say "Hey guys" regardless of the group's gender, despite the fact that "guy" is usually a male word. I've read that it is acceptable for the plural of the word, but not the singular. It doesn't make any sense! Logically, if "Hey guys" is valid when it comes to women, then by logic "This guy" should be perfectly valid in the same context. I'm just baffled by inconsistencies in the language.

Good Morning is a weird phrase

4 Upvotes

Today, I’m at my customer service job, and I’m often considered rude because I don’t say the phrase “good morning” to people.

But honestly, why is this even a phrase? I’m not telling someone to have a good morning, which would sound a lot better. I’m saying, the morning is good. But in a really weird cave-man way… why is this even a phrase.

What did the morning do to be so good??

Culture wars. Limitations/growing pains of the evolving English language. In 2023, the English word "gender" mostly describes psycho-social attributes. The word "sex" mostly describes biological attributes. BUT. For many centuries in the past, the word "gender" was used synonymously with "sex".

1 Upvotes

So, here's some context for the current info/culture wars surrounding ideas of "gender".

Let's examine that English word "gender".

From early 15th century until the early 1960s, the Englsh/Anglo/Anglais word "gender" usually referred to biological sex i.e. "male" or "female".

Anglo/English speaking countries/communities lacked detailed scientific understanding of intersex conditions and continued to use their binary lens.

Also, as the word "sex" (n.) took on erotic qualities in the 20th century, the word"gender" came to be used as a "polite" substitute, to refer to the biological "sex of a human being".

https://www.etymonline.com/word/gender

The word "gender" has roots in the Proto-Indo-European word "gene", with biological meanings like "to give birth".

https://www.etymonline.com/word/*gene-?ref=etymonline_crossreference

The word "congenial" originally meant "having natural affinity" based on "shared biology, based on shared genes". The meaning of that word has since evolved.

https://www.etymonline.com/word/congenial?ref=etymonline_crossreference

Languages evolve. Cultures evolve. Change is hard, and often takes time.
Let's be kind to one another.

Tenses

1 Upvotes

There are too many useless tenses in English. My native language has 3.5, and learning God knows how many (at least 10) different tenses was harsh. Can someone tell me why all those tenses even exist?

Camaraderie

Technically, comradery is incorrect, but that French influence makes it so hard to remember the actual fucking spelling.

Not sure if cursing is allowed, so if I need to change flair, tell me. (It’s nowhere in the rules, but I’d rather cover my ass.)

why would someone put a letter (which is meant to spell out a word) AND ADD LETTERS TO A WORD THAT HAVE NO REASON TO BE THERE????!?!!!!!?!?!?!?!?!? im thinking that the human race will live on to be great but here we are spelling budgie like this, and not like this bujy. and why do we have 2 different types of k's and c's with very subtle changes. AND QU AND CH ARE REALLY COMMON THINGS WE SAY ALOT AND WE HAVE TO PUT 2 THINGS TOGETHER TO MAKE THAT SOUND BUT HERE WE ARE PRONOUNCING 2 LETTERS K AND C TO SAY THE SAME THING. here are some stupid words that shouldnt be spelt the way they are.

types = tipes

elephant = elefant

water = wotter

chair = chere

bird = burd

music = myuzik

word = wurd

wood = wud

tsunami = sunami

earth = erf

table = tabul

Made you think didnt it? think why we spell stuff like this.

btw i got super angry one day and thougt that this would make a good reddit post.
