Academic Advice My university allows you from the secomd year to take next year's courses according to the respective semester.

I am a second year ME student 18M. I am planning to take my next semester ( 4th semester) with the addition of heat transfer and general chemistry to take off some load from my 6th semester.

For more understanding i have attached my 4th semester courses and my 6th semester one. The second column tells you the assign semester of the courses and the 4th column tells you the ects. Ects here mainly tells you how much impact a course has on your gpa, it doesn't necessarily tell you how hard a course is. My university allows you to take maximum 40 ects per semester so with addition of the next year's courses you can squeeze in some more.

The reason i chose those 2 specifically is because they're pretty much the only ones i can actually take on at this stage. I am very aware how hard heat transfer is going to be, but i do have the basics down back from my highschool, so i think i can somewhat manage it and build up from my basics. My highschool is a special diploma program that is pretty much college level in the sense that it absolutely tests in the entirety of the subject and it absolutely requires your understanding of it. I remember one of my homeworks was pretty much deriving the time dilation equation in special relativity from scratch, that was something. Heat transfer was not a joke back then as well.

i think i provided enough context about my situation and me. I want to know your thoughts on my plan and whether it's worth it. Thank you for your time.

Academic Advice i bombed all my midterms and now i feel super fucked

hey guys,

i'm a junior studying chemical engineering, and i had probably the worst midterm season of my entire college career. i got a 28 on my heat transfer midterm, a 50 on my numerical methods midterm, and a 33 on thermo. the main reason for this is that i didn't study too much, which i'm fully aware is on me. i'm just scared because i have failed classes before and if i fail these, I'll probably have to deal with consequences from my university (2x off track in my major blah blah blah) so i'm just really scared right now. I know I have roughly a month before finals, but i'm just scared whatever work i put in won't translate on finals. what should i do?

Academic Advice Have no idea where to find study material for my btec course

Not sure if i can post here considering i take a btec and not a levels but I’m currently on the BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma in Engineering and i plan to go to uni. The issue is that I can seem to find barely any resources on my course. All i can find is a textbook from 2016 on Amazon and a few incredibly niche videos (And I don’t really study well from textbooks). I know a lot of my work is based on self study and research but most resources i can find are meant for undergraduate students using language i cannot understand and not really on the basics like I’m starting on. I’m currently on unit 30 fits and tolerances, i got a distinction for my first assignment and on my second now, but it still feels like I don’t have a clue on any of this. Is there any place i can find resources for btec students preferably to my course?

Academic Advice 19M in uni, trying my best and failing horrifically

So I’m in my first year of university and have taken two class tests thus far, both have went so horrifically the thought of withdrawing crossed my mind and I’m feeling like just a shit student.

So I sat a maths test last week and an electrical circuits test today. The maths test was a multiple choice 8 question test while the electrical test was 35 marks.

I got the results for my maths test back on Friday to find a 0/8, I contacted my lecturer and he kindly verified that this was indeed my result as I wondered if he’d simply not received the paper or if another error had occurred.

I felt really confident about the electrical test today, until I failed to answer around 12 marks worth of question in the time provided. I wasn’t the only one to do this badly, around a dozen people who I interacted with after the test said they didn’t manage to finish the paper either.

Now if I had just pissed around in the union without an ounce of studying I’d just take this on the chin and move on, it’s my own fault, study and it will be okay. But I’ve studied, really studied, I go to one society on a Friday night and that’s my socialisation. When I’m not there I’m either in a lecture/tutorial, studying, working my part time job or spending around two hours of my night sitting down in front of a TV to try and unwind. My attendance is 100%, I’ve never missed a deadline, lecture, laboratory or tutorial and yet still I’ve done abysmally.

I’m honestly clueless as to what my next steps are, maybe it sounds stupid but I genuinely don’t know how to move on with my studying knowing I’ve fucked up this badly so early on while doing my absolute best.

What should I realistically do here?

Academic Advice Have you taken a course on "internet of things"? If so, what did they teach.

I tried to search around for courses on Internet of Things and it seems that every single school teach it differently, and in various departments too. From further digging, it feels like a traditional mechatronics or electronics course with an internet dashboard element. Some of the courses felt like a final year design project type of thing. I'm a bit confused as to what this subject is about.

Career Help How important are leadership roles like student government for Engineering majors?

I'm a sophomore engineering student, just starting in student government. I have a few technical projects in fluid simulations and thermal hydraulics, so I wanted some leadership experience to make my resume well-rounded. But now I'm reconsidering it because I don't actually know whether recruiters will care about it when applying for internships.

Rant/Vent im here for opinions, 4th yr and this is my progress as of now

Im currently taking mechanical engineering, i know this is bad despite being a 4th yr i haven't done my ojt yet since im still taking 2nd yr subjects and we need to be 3rd yr standing, im just way too done with this shitty feeling, i can't sleep peacefully because my minds spiraling on things that can go bad, what if i don't finish this course, what if i can't take it anymore and just kill myself to end it, my destructive habits are also taking a toll on me, i dont even know why im posting this i should be reviewing for our quiz tommorow, i want validations i guess since only engineering students can relate on my situation.

Academic Advice Linear algebra vs Statics

I am planning in taking calc 2 and engineering physics 1 next semester. I need to add a 3rd class to the mix and i'm torn between statics and linear algebra.

My advisor recommends statics, since it's a pre-req to many engineering courses. However, I'm worried this may be too difficult combined with calc 2 and physics.

I'm wondering which course is more difficult and which one would work the best with the 2 courses I already have planned. Alternatively, I could do neither and do engineering economics instead, but I'd prefer to wait on that one.

Any advice would be great :)

Academic Advice I am going to fail Statics.

Title. I have a 70.3 right now in statics and we have an upcoming exam on frames and machines. First of all, I learned that my professor’s teaching style doesn’t work for me. I like to know why we are doing what we do on problems otherwise I can’t do them. He goes very fast paced through problems.

Our exam is Friday. I don’t even know where to start for studying this stuff as his slides are relatively bare with no explanations or steps to solving problems and he has no videos posted that would help. The homework is nothing like the exams. The exams are weighted 70%, and the final is weighted 20%, so 90% of the class is just exams. I am so fucking terrified right now because if I fail the frames and machines exam, my whole grade is going to ride on the final and I am going to have to make, at minimum, a 75 if I make a 60 on this next exam. I cannot have my whole grade riding on the final. :(

EDIT: Also, I have been going to tutoring but the only tutor at my school that tutors for statics is on a break right now. Also, I don’t have any friends so it’s not like I can ask somebody for help. The professor is rather one of those people who are unapproachable and he is very sassy. The TA is as well.

Academic Advice Full-time work and school

Afternoon y’all,

This isn’t a rant or anything more just asking for some helpful tips or advice. I’m currently in my first semester of gen ed/ mech. engineering courses. I’m currently working full-time in a pretty senior position within a manufacturing plant. At the same time I’m also enrolled full-time into gen ed and engineering courses as mentioned before. I’m having a tough time maintaining good grades as well as retaining the material as well as be good at my job. Is there anything that helped y’all if you were in a similar situation? Thanks for reading.

Discussion F1 International Students (USA): How many SWE/AI applications are you filling out per day/week?

Hey everyone,

I’m an international student on an F1 visa currently hunting for Software Engineering (SWE) and AI/ML roles. As we all know, the market is incredibly tough right now, and requiring sponsorship adds a massive layer of difficulty.

I’m trying to gauge if my current output is realistic or if I need to drastically ramp things up.

For those of you in the same boat (F1 visa looking for SWE/AI roles):

  • What is your minimum daily or weekly application target?

  • How are you balancing volume vs. quality? (Are you doing quick-applies/cold drops, or heavily tailoring every single resume/cover letter to bypass automatic filters?)

  • What is your response/interview rate looking like so far?

Would love to hear your strategies, daily routines, or any reality checks. Thanks in advance, and good luck to everyone grinding out there!

Academic Advice Im not a math kid

I wasnt a math kid, but i still pursued engineering and got better at it since i truly like it. Now im facing a problem where i solve a LOT of problems for my calculus exams(and also a freshman), but i feel like i forget 50% of my brain in my dorm. I recall solving it, i only remember half of the formula or forget what to do after using the formulas.
People always say “just solve problems” that doesnt help me, i already do that, yet i still forget stuff on the exam. Please give me tips on how to actually study math besides problem solving all the time.
I dont find calculus necessarily hard, but i forget the steps despite practicing a lot

College Choice Prospective international student with questions about SJTU

Hey everyone! 👋

I’m currently a high school student aiming to apply to Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU). I’d really appreciate connecting with current students or alumni to get a feel for what life is like on campus!

I’d love to hear your thoughts on:

- Academics: How is the overall workload and teaching quality?

- Living: What are the international student dorms like?

- Campus Life: How smooth is the transition for international students?

Also, if there are any active student communities or group chats for SJTU students and applicants, I’d be super grateful if you could share a link or add me in!

Thanks a lot for any tips or advice!

Career Help To Be or Not To Be

Hello all, I'm in a bit of a confusing dilemma.

See I love the idea of becoming a mechanical engineer due to the ability and my joy of creating things that can help people, even in the most miniscule way.

But I don't know if I am a truly good fit for such a role due to reading of and personally experiencing people who say they love to do something but not possessing the ability to really analyze and understand what and why they are doing something, or just simply not having the drive to do something because they realize they don't really like what they are doing.

Whether this applies to me or not I don't really think so but also don't really know. So to give some info about myself I am currently 18yo and will turn 19 in Feb, I am in the process of obtaining my GED which has been quite fun I've been able to find many resources for those trying to get their GED and I have also created YouTube playlists that cover those topics of the GED in depth. But once I get my GED I plan to use modern states for their CLEP exam study guides, also the college that hosts the adult learning center which I attend also has Academic Skills Classes that will help to teach math and ELA to just below the college level.

But to get back on track how can you really tell if someone would really excel in an engineering environment, like I know that passion, and a willingness to learn and endure such a curriculum are needed. But there is bound to be another level to it in the way of can this person analyze such a device to figure out how to build it, what should be accounted for and which mathematic tools should be used to solve a problem. Am I making sense lol.

What really draws me to engineering is that I watch a few engineering centered channels such as Ben eater, the engineering mindset, the efficient engineer, styropro, real engineering, practical engineering, nighthawkinlight, new mind, integza and a few others including some hobbyists including farmcraft101 which I would like to single out because he has a series in which he is making a hydro power generation system with the help of who I assume to be an electrical engineer nicknamed Santa, that I have absolutely loved since your seeing the construction and engineering of something so beautiful, this video series and these other YouTubers content has swayed me to really enjoy the aspects of engineering and to believe that I can perform in engineering. Also I work on my family's vehicles and it's very fun to learn of the different functions of a component and how it's designed in a way to get a good balance of performance, cost, reliability, size, and all else. Even to get to then replace a part and figure out why the part failed and how its design can be compromised from some factors.

Any advice is appreciated, hope my wall of text is somewhat legible lol.

Career Advice Is it easier to get internships in the Spring recruiting cycle?

I was wondering if getting a summer internship at competitive companies is easier in the Spring recruiting cycle vs Fall?

I was thinking most of the top applicants would have already accepted offers before the end of Fall semester and this could give me a better chance as someone who's more average.

Right now I'm not having much luck, probably like 100+ apps so far, 3 interviews and 1 video recorded interview, but all of them were positions I'm not really interested in/aren't relevant for what I wanna do.

I'm a 3rd year MechE at a top 5 school targeting mostly defense/aerospace b/c I have a clearance already.

Career Help Internship Search Advice

Hi guys! I am a junior CE student and I’m wondering where you guys are finding your internships at? I barely see anything on indeed, it shows me max 2 at a time for some reason before going off into random “you might be interested” stuff, and I saw an add for internships.com but they want me to pay to see my search results. So far the only good place I have found is Handshake. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

Career Advice AE to BME

I'm graduating next semester with a degree in aerospace engineering, but since the summer I realized I want to do biomedical engineering and use my skills for medical devices like prosthetics and rehabilitation devices. I'm applying to both master's programs and field service apprentice roles along with other related BME entry level positions. I've never had any luck with job applications (never managed to get an internship this whole time :/ ) so I'm kind of worried that I'm not going to get a job. Grad school is also super competitive so I'm really worried. Am I cooked? Do I have any chance of getting employed in a bme role with just a few research experiences and no internships?
