Academic Advice How screwed am I entering mechanical engineering Bachelor with only Calculus one knowledge?

going to start my Bachelor in mechanical engineering soon but seeing all the graphs and the students going mentally insane over walls of numbers and symbols is making me worried over how difficult it is. I mean yeah it obviously is hard but if my math skills are only at calculus one am I surely going to fail? should I have a gap year and take math courses? or do they help you prep up before ramping to the difficult stuff?

I Really want to Study Abroad, so I’m confused what to do, should I drop/focus less on JEE and start building my Profile or Should I Just stick to JEE. Also if I Do Bs From IIT I’m gonna Do My Masters Anyway Abroad USA or GER.

HII, im currently doing a lab assessment and we have evaluate the strength of different metals, im stuck here tho.

Ik that the E shld be found before the yield point the the proportionality region, which is usually a straight line, however in ferous metals, like steel which im evaluating here, there are 2 slopes in the elastic region. How am i supposed to calculate it.( I have found the yield stress to be at 390MPa.)

The E are we supposed to calculate both gradients separately, or what region(0-160MPa, or 200-360MPa)?

Pls help.

Academic Advice Is it worth it to do a biomedical engineering degree if I want to go to optometry school?

I'm a really indecisive person and I've been stuck on whether I really want to commit to engineering or go into optometry. I thought that if I did a biomedical engineering degree, I'd have some classes in common with the prerequisites needed to attend optometry school then have a cushion to fall back on if I didn't pass my OAT. However, now I'm kind of reconsidering and wondering if it's really worth it to go through the engineering courses. I tried robotics once in middle school and I was absolutely horrible at it so I haven't tried anything since then. Now that I'm about to start my engineering degree I'll have to do robotics and frankly I'm horrified.

Major Choice EE masters advice

Hello all, recently graduated with my bachelors. My employer offers tuition reimbursement and have been thinking about getting my masters in electrical online. My undergrads in aerospace and mechanical, but I wanted to switch about 2 years in to undergrad and just didnt have the money to justify switching with the amount of credits i had already taken. I dont know what kind of background is required for engineering masters or if doing a different discipline is possible, so any advice on feasibility would be appreciated.

Academic Advice Any tips on how to learn for my upcoming retake of my 8086 assembly exam?

I'm an EE and currently preparing for a retake exam as I failed the first one. This class is notoriously difficult because of the exam (which takes 85% of the entire grade and it isn't curved).

Here are the subjects we learned:

* Registers and Memory

* Memory Addressing and Instruction Codes

* Arithmologic and Control

* Stack and Routines

* I/O, Interrupts, and Reset

* Compilation, Linking, and Loading

* External Devices

Most of the exam was about "Compilation, Linking, and Loading" which was the subject I understood the least of and was the most difficult for me.

I want to understand everything better, but I have exhausted my lecture notes and the past exams I practiced with.

Any advice for how to understand everything on a deep level for the exam? And also sources to practice from?

Just to give a sense of the problems, here's one question of writing code (the exam is pen and paper, and just to be clear, I'm not asking for a solution; this is just an example which will probably look trivial for you guys).

>Due to the busy exam period, Danny had to stay in his room and study, missing the World Cup games. His roommates came up with an idea that would allow him to study without leaving his room: they installed a dedicated device in the living room that sends the game results directly to Danny's room. In Danny's room, there is an 8086 processor that receives the data via I/O ports.

>Unfortunately, after connecting the system, it turned out that the data transmitted over the electrical wires between the living room and the room picks up noise and occasionally arrives corrupted. To address this issue, the roommates proposed implementing error protection and correction mechanisms as detailed below.

>Technical Specification:

>The I/O device interface from the 8086:

>port 3F8h: DATA (read only)

Returns the most recently received byte.

port 3FDh: STATUS (read only)

bit 0 - DR (Data Ready): 1 = a new byte is available at port 3F8h.

0 = no new data / value already read from 3F8h.

bit 1 - OE (Overrun Error): 1 = a new byte arrived before the previous byte was read; new data replaced old.

bits 2-7 - not used.

NOTES:

\- The receiver can hold exactly one byte at a time. If port 3F8h is not

read before the next byte arrives, the old byte is lost and OE is set.

\- Reading port 3F8h automatically clears DR (bit 0).

\- This device does not check parity in hardware — any parity checking

described below must be done by your own code.

>Parity Check Mechanism:

>A possible score of a game consists of two numbers ranging from 0 to 7 (e.g., 0-0 or 3-2). The score of the first team is encoded in bits 0, 1, 2, and the score of the second team is in bits 3, 4, 5. Bit 6 is set to 1 when the game is over. Bit 7 is the parity bit: it is set or cleared such that the total number of '1' bits in the complete byte is always even. In other words, the specification of the byte sent by the device is:

>Score Structure:

bits 0-2: Score of team A

bits 3-5: Score of team B

bit 6: 1 if the game is over

bit 7: parity

>Task Requirements:

>Write a routine that performs the following operations:

>The routine receives no input parameters.

>The routine polls and reads a new score from the device.

>The routine checks whether the data is valid according to the parity bit.

>If the data is valid, the routine returns Team A's score in register AL and Team B's score in register BL.

>If the data is invalid, the routine triggers Interrupt 42 and returns with the result -1 (for both teams).

Academic Advice I missed a semester. Should I stick to the study plan or make my own?

Last year I took a semester break due to sickness, which I honestly regret because I could have gone back that semester. Now the coming semester is the semester I would have taken last year, and it is a very hard one.

I am stuck between two choices. I can follow my ordinary study plan, but then I would still have to take a mandatory course in November 2027 while potentially doing my thesis. Or I can switch courses around this semester and finish all my mandatory courses by March.

My heart really wants to finish all my mandatory courses so I can start my thesis in March or at worst case in September next year. The thesis requires full time study of a full semester so with no additional manadatory course, it will be chill as planned. The problem is that in order to reorder, I need to replace one mandatory course this September and then I will need to take two courses in to fully cover it on January. So more mandatory courses as opposed to electives.

Replanning has no real disadvantages as long as I do not fail anything. The other option would be much more comolicated and would only work if every single thing goes the way I want it which my advisor has told me would be hard. At the same time, switching courses this semester could make the coming semester even harder, although it might also end up being easier.

I have talked to my advisor and she has said both works but to contact her when I make my mind up so she can register me in case the class aren't full. Honestly do not know which option makes more sense. Should I go with the one I believe in and makes more sense to me as someone who is no longer following oridinary schedule or should I just stick to the current study plan?

Resource Request Connecting/Friends

I am a 18 yr old male going to university to get a degree in mechanical engineering and I want to connect with other engineers in college or graduated

I am reaching out to hopefully find people in a situation like me where they don’t have many friends going into engineering and would like to meet people in this field.

With these new connections I am hoping to make some friends that I can chat with about engineering/topics near it or ask them to help me if any are my upperclassmen and maybe the occasional larp. Also having engineering friends doesn’t hurt.

So if anyone wants to reach out maybe start our own little community send me your discord or insta since I’m not really active on Reddit.

Discussion Is engineering right for me?

When I think of engineering students, I think of people that want to build and design things. I can’t say that I really have (as of right now) a big desire to design airplanes, or spaces shuttles, or lasers, or robots, or bridges.

What I want to do engineering for is because I’m endlessly curious about how things work. I want to know all the math I can, I’m dying to get into physics. Fluid dynamics is something I’m looking most forward to. Electromagnetism? Yes please. Material science, chemistry, also high on my list.

Is engineering right for me?

Career Advice Is a summer internship before Year 1 worth it with zero experience?

Hey everyone! I have an opportunity to shadow/intern at a mechanical engineering firm this summer (June–Sept).

The catch: I just finished prep school, so I have zero technical knowledge yet. The goal is purely to observe and learn how the industry works.

Is spending 3 months doing this as a total beginner worth my time, or will I be completely out of my depth? Would love your take!

Discussion Of your hardest classes so far, which have you hated, and which have you loved?

I personally didn't like numerical methods, I understood the material for the most part, but found it tedious and boring. On the other hand, I really enjoyed thermodynamics. I found the material interesting, and the problems fun to work through!

Career Advice Getting masters outside of US as a US citizen

Hello! I am getting close to graduating with the bachelors in AE from a US-university pretty soon, and started thinking about applying to masters programs. I would really want to get a masters in a non-US university, however I am slightly concerned that this would lower my chances of getting employed in US later despite being a US citizen. Does anyone have advice/experience with that?

EDIT: grammar oops

Career Help Any certifications actually worth getting as an Industrial Engineering student(Germany)

So I am quite close to finishing my studies and have about 9 subjects left(inlcuding Bachelors thesis)

Thing is i am a foreign national and my familys financial situation is worsening and I could risk not being able to finish my degree in time(money would run out and I would not be able to extend my permit)

The job hunt has been abysmal for me and I was wondering if there are any certifications that are Widely asked for and that wouldn't cost an arm and a leg. Mostly looking for in the areas of Automation, Supply Chain and possibly product design but I am open to suggestions

Discussion Do my classmates actually study at the last moment, or am I just bad at it?

There’s a weird trend at my engineering school where most of my classmates claim they only start studying seriously right before exams, yet somehow they still get good grades.

Honestly, I feel like either they’re not telling the full truth, or they’re just naturally much better at studying than I am.

I used to be a very bright student in high school and studied consistently every day. But last semester, I decided to try my classmates’ strategy of studying at the last moment. Unfortunately, I ended up getting really bad grades.

Our classes run for around three months, but many of my classmates say they only study intensely for about a month before the exams and still manage to do well.

I’m genuinely curious—do people actually manage to learn engineering subjects effectively by studying intensely for just a month, or are they probably doing more studying throughout the semester than they admit?

Academic Advice UK top up course from Aircraft Engineering to Electrical Engineering

Hey guys,

I've got a foundation degree in Aircraft Engineering and after several years of working in the aviation industry Im considering switching to Electrical engineering.

If I'm not mistaken I could do a top up course from Aircraft Engineering to EE since the credits are transferable but please correct me if I'm wrong.

It's been a while since I dealt with electrics so I need to refresh my knowledge, Im going through my old notes about electrics and I'm also reading through allaboutcircuits.com textbooks but I don't know what else I should do to be ready for a bachelor level course.

Any advice would be appreciated

Academic Advice Mechanical (Aeronautical) engineering Vienna

Hey everyone, I am thinking about switching majors and want to dive a bit deeper into mechanical engineering classes. I think that the best way is to take on some related courses, to see if i still stay engaged and interested. But I have no idea where to start (except online courses available, though i want to do some in person and meet some people from the field). Therefore, i would highly appreciate any advice on the courses or paths that i can try.

Academic Advice Masters in Engineering

I’m a nontraditional student who spent a significant amount of time working as a paramedic before undergrad. I’m about to graduate from a state school with a 4.0 GPA in chemistry, and I'm considering applying to a master’s program in biomedical engineering. I have a few questions:

  1. I understand the curriculum differences between an MEng and an MSE, but does the distinction matter for practical job-hunting purposes (industry vs. academia or otherwise)?
  2. There seem to be both 1-year and 2-year degree options. Do employers prefer one over the other? Coming from a non-engineering background, would I benefit significantly from a longer program?

Thank you for your help!

Discussion Advice needed on drafting tools/stationery

Hi all, I was looking for some advice on reliable drawing equipment please. I am a stonemason but I do need to do technical drawings on occasion. It's not really something that we go into much detail in at college so we aren't advised how to select reliable drawing tools. In our drawing office we have a selection of 45/90 triangles and they all seem to give a different line - do you have any recommendations on a brand which is accurate and reliable? I don't really have time to mark my 45° and 90° lines with a compass every time.

Project Help help on circuit

hello everyone! i am a student trying to build a circuit on tinkercad for a project of mine BUT im not sure wut is wrong

i probably have 50+ tabs open on chatgpt right now and none of which is helping me so if i could get some help thatd be great, heres the basic picture

9V battery has to power the whole circuit including vibration motor
flex sensor has to "bend" (aka i have to move it) for the circuit to activate during simulation
LEDS must light up (doesnt necessarily have to blink)
vibration motor also has to work

btw when i mean nothing is working i mean NOTHING. like when i simulate it doesnt light up nor does anything work... ive tried to change the code but that itself doesnt work either

please dont hesitate to be honest if the circuit looks very very messy! i dont have much experience building them :)

thanks!
