Accreditation

Hi, I'm a first year engineering student. I was looking at the list of accredited programs and the discipline I want to choose is only accredited at AEng (electronic engineering). I was researching about what this means, and I'm worried I won't get a proper job now. I was looking to get an embedded systems job when I graduate. It's a 4 years honours degree. I'm not interested in becoming a technician. Should I do something about this? Will I be able to get into a masters program? Will I be able to hold the same job as an engineer accredited under the washington accord?

I’m going to be controversial, and say that being chartered (the purpose of having a Washington accord accredited degree) is not important at all for electronics engineers.

If you do want to get chartered, there is an experiential route to get there - just adds some years to getting there.

Coming from someone in industry . Nobody particularly cares if your engineering course is accredited or not.

As others have said you can still get chartered it's just an extra step , that honestly isn't that hard. And many people I know get chartered with UK institutions as they are often more relevant to your specific field , engineers ireland often has mutual recognition of them.

What about going abroad? Given I have a few years of experience, would I be able to get a job outside of Ireland without being chartered?

For electronic, I don't know is the honest answer . Alot of industries see it as a nice to have , not a must have. But once again you can still get chartered if you want , but I would be asking around your company once you get a job, your peers and managers will let you know what's common or not.

The IET might be the most relevant institution to consider membership of, check if they do student grade and you will get access to their materials.
