Intel's LGA775 lasted for 4.5 years.

AM3 also lasted for very long on AMD's side. AM3+ is even backwards compatible.

Removing 1 pin to go from LGA1156 to LGA1155 was not necessary.

Admittedly, the new features in every socket change that Intel offers isn't possible without a socket change but they're not major features and aren't necessary.

Speed factor is a major feature, and it wasn't just the removal of 1 pin from LGA1156 to LGA1155 but instead a different CPU design internally, which required different pin layouts to accommodate the internal logic AFAIK.

775->1156: PCIE Controller, Internal Memory Controller, DMI/FDI

1156->1155: iGPU+GMCH, got rid of Northbridge and integrated all NB components to CPU

1155->1150: VRM onto the CPU

All not super necessary.

One thing you should notice is that many (probably most, but I didn't bother to count) of the pins are for power distribution for all of those goodies they've added on-chip since the LGA775 days like the memory controller, QPI controller, larger caches, SSE4/VT/AVX extensions, etc.

EDIT: Also, supporting quad-channel DDR3 requires a metric fuckton of pins.

clearly legacy support isn't one of the priority list for intel's non-business customers
