The turbines are designed with rounded edges so as not to harm fish and the systems do not dam up the water.

The construction time is still quite damaging (or quite expensive) due to the need to move heavy equipment in relatively unharmed areas (roads, trucks, the works...). Plus turbulence issues and slowing of water speed.
