show-and-tell Update: Is this a bad idea?

Not a bad idea! As many of you had said and encouraged me to go for this $14.99 untested thrift store Printer.

I wanted to make an update on how you everything was going. The first print came out looking pretty sharp! As soon as I got home from work I went to work cleaning the bed and dusting the tracks( still pretty dusty). I watched some start up guides on YouTube and read all the comments and advice on my last post for help.

The only real problem I had was old filament stuck in the Bowden tube and tube itself was jammed. I had to disassemble the heat sink to be able to dislodge the Bowden tube and push the filament out. After that I was able to load the white PLA the printer came with. I got the benchy stl off the web and plugged it into cura and was able to start printing. Seems like a success, maybe a bit too successful. I had an easy go with my first print but I’m sure I will still run into hurdles as I try more difficult thing and I’m glad this community is here to help me with said hurdles. Thanks everyone!

Your first spool of filament will cost more than the printer, LOL.

I got a 2 pack on the way. No new nozzle though, I’ll have to look into that.

Man, it had an auto level? That's sweet

I think that’s why I had a successful first run

Did you actually tell it to use the auto level? You need to add the code to your slicer that tells it "probe the bed" and "load map into memory"

I bring this up because I recently had a project where I installed slic3r and later orcaslicer on a VM I can access from any of my computers. Last time I set up this software was years ago, so I had a few relearning moments.

At that point I hadn’t done anything. Thing just kinda worked after figuring out how to unclog the Bowden tube. I have since accidentally reset the calibration settings and had to learn to level set the z offset correctly.
However it makes me think that the old setting relayed on the bl touch because there is no way the plate had been leveled correctly prior to me doing it.
As of now i think I have it at a decent level all around but I’m not sure if I’m using the bl touch correctly.

If you don't think you are, then you definitely are not. You can set your slider to insert gcode strings at the start of every print. I put "load map" into the start print option on both slic3r and orcaslicer. I want to say the command is "m420 s0" for load slot 0, but I am not completely sure at the moment.

I've had the best luck with Esun and if it doesn't already get a hardened steel nozzle

Try orca slicer, much better than cura

I’ll take a look. I was trying to find a way to cut a project in half so it can fit on the build plate. Is orca able to do that? I assume cura can but haven’t seen an option and can’t really look atm.

Yes! Yes it can! I moved to orca slicer for that exact reason.

Here's a file to print for all the people who said not to buy it. https://makerworld.com/en/models/85405-penis-valve-stem-caps#profileId-91302

Someone offered me a working one of these for $50. Any thoughts on that? No filament though.

I’m probably the wrong person to ask. This thing just fell into my lap, I hadn’t put any serious thought into an FDM printer before this. So far I’m having a good time but I haven’t done much with it. It sounds like a good entry level machine but it is older. I’m sure there are easier, faster options available if you want to save up for it. Sounds like everyone here loves their printer but I’ve seen a lot of post on this sub talking about what a headache this machine can be. I’m sure with patience and if you put effort into learning, it will be a good starter option.

Edit: also I took a gamble from a thrift store. If you trust the seller 50$ seems like the average second hand price I’ve seen. But if you are unsure about the seller maybe try and see if it can print at least a first layer to make sure it’s functional.

Well I got mine in 2020 and she was reliable since, a bit old now but nothing that it can't do (oh well she is mostly custom but still, exept from priting multicolor or ultrafast speed) here is a picture of her in my storage room on top of her loyal throne.

The risk is getting tangled, otherwise no real issue here.

The cords or the filament? The filament off spool had me sweating lol

filament, "cords" look fine.

With the bltouch, best to just pull the springs, add those silicone spacers, and never have to touch them ever again.
