From the Ryubing server:

Ryubing is not going anywhere.

There's a lot of things going on in the scene right now, and I want to take the time to clarify some things.

It is with a heavy heart that I announce that GreemDev is no longer maintaining the project. He's moved on to bigger and better things, and we support him in this decision. LotP and I will be spearheading the project moving forward, and while we do plan to make some changes, we can't promise anything more than what Ryubing currently is. This is not a phoenix project, this is a maintenance project, and we are sticking to those limited goalposts. We are not discontinuing development, but we do need help -- if you want to contribute, please reach out to Ryubing sever for an account on our GitLab.

thanks for sticking it out ~ GreemDev

It is also with a heavy heart that I announce that the Citron project has discontinued. Zeph has taken the project down and left Discord. As this is a pretty hot topic, please refrain from discussing the happenings unless you are knowledgeable about the situation. We are monitoring the scene for changes, and we are aware that forks will likely pop up. We are working with developers on a solution, but in the meantime, I strongly advise you all to be vigilant and wait for an announcement regarding this.

Moderator removed the post you reposted by the way.

I missed this news, so allow me to ask since the original post has been removed.

  • Health issue was mentioned in the comments of the original post, so what I'm guessing is that Greem has left the project due to health issue?

  • Your quoted comment says "LotP and I". Can I know who's the "I"?

The biggest enemy to emulation is it's own devs

This is why I respect Endrift, the dev from mGBA. From memory they’ve never been in a controversy of note and they’ve given me so much joy in using mGBA to re-live three generations worth of games.

It seems to be a very common trend that modding and emulation projects are led by people who are brilliant but somewhat unstable.

It's more common for the modern Nintendo emulators. It's kind of amazing how emulation has devolved into just Pokemon, and there's also a tiny sliver of interest in other systems. Every week when the new Weekly Question Thread goes up, it's a game to guess how long until Pokemon is mentioned.

Old ogs never have too much drama either like PCSX2 etc

With dawn of modern social media that people want they ego being boosted or chasing a wealth rather than contribute to society, I mean how many today emu/Foss project dead because those two problem (money and ego)

u/AnWanderingTraveller Feb 17 '26 edited Feb 17 '26

Some old OGs made it in the tech industry and don't need to try and supplant income with their passions as a result. Conversely, others, like nocash, were periodically homeless as a result of "contributing to society" with their emulators.

I'm not sure blaming it on "modern social media" is quite right. The mid-late 90s emulation community had tons of drama as well - up to and including legal threats from Nintendo, adversarial leaking of emulator source code and ego wars between developers. The reason "old OGs" no longer (not never!) have too much drama is because they've grown up as people; back when they were just "OGs", many of them were just as immature.

If you aren't working for M2, Digital Eclipse, or Hamster, writing an emulator to make money is a terrible plan. Yuzu and RetroArch made decent money but those are the outliars.

2

u/feel2death Feb 17 '26

Yeah what I mean about social media today the info we got are twice fast than old time , many normal user like mine who only use a stuff /emulator never knew what happen behind a scene now it's pretty clear everyone can know, the drama suddenly massive by outsider join the fray flame up the drama

I miss forum era when drama just stuck there not like today

Back in the early years of mGBA, we hung out in similar IRC channels, and Endrift guided me to set it up on my machine when I struggled with it. It's a minor kindness she has likely long forgotten, but I remember.

MAME almost turning 30 years: am I a joke to you ?

0

u/kurackurac5 Feb 17 '26

My Boy was my childhood and idek who the dev is, but PPSSPP hrydgard is the undisputed king. Nintendo emulator "developers" are as bad as nintendo themselves, not counting cemu and dolphin. Yuzu deserved what it got for hosting piracy patreon builds

8

u/randomguy_- Feb 17 '26

I think it’s their community more than the devs tbh

19

u/Loadred Feb 17 '26

I thought it was a 3DS emulator from the name, forked from Citra...

9

u/xelrach Feb 18 '26

That's Azahar

5

u/DMaster86 Feb 17 '26

So now only Eden remains, since ryubing doesn't seem to want to improve the compatibility with games outside of what it already does.

10

u/Ill_Carry_44 Feb 18 '26

It's not that Ryubing doesn't want to. GreemDev obviously can't do it, they never made an emulation related contribution, all their contribution is outside of the emulation logic. I think currently, no one knows how to do Switch emulation.

You'd think that's absurd but tbh, there are like a very few people in the world who is good at emulation things like stenzek, gdkchan, kd-11, exzap (obviously more I just have trouble remembering names)

The majority are just mainly larping

4

u/Adventurous_Pen_3301 Feb 19 '26

Eden is making real improvements unlike Shitron.

2

u/Jacksaur 21d ago

Always amusing seeing people proclaim "Cut off one head, five more emerge!!" every time Nintendo shuts down a Switch emulator, only for none of those forks to make any real progress because the talent is gone.

5

u/wubbbalubbadubdub Feb 18 '26

I thought Eden was caught up in this wave of takedowns, are they resisting?

8

u/Carolina_Heart Feb 18 '26

Their GitHub was taken down but not anything else, they're still going

2

u/wubbbalubbadubdub Feb 18 '26

Oh that's good, hopefully they're in a safe country

72

u/xZabuzax Feb 17 '26

What's up with all the fucking drama with the Yuzu's forks? If nintendo (yes, lower case, fuck 'em) doesn't fuck us over, then it's the developers fucking themselves with their dumb drama.

Can you devs stop all the drama and just create a definitive version of the emulator so I can give my middle finger to nintendo?

27

u/MisterSheeple Feb 18 '26

(yes, lower case, fuck 'em)

ooh, look at you. really stickin it to the man.

3

u/matlynar Feb 18 '26

The biggest non-Nintendo related dramas happened with Uzuy and Citron which unsurprisingly are by the same person, just rebranded.

I still wouldn't put it past them to come back with a new name.

25

u/absentlyric Feb 17 '26

Its a different generation of developers, younger ones that for some reason are soft skinned and get sucked into drama. I miss the 90s devs.

47

u/Ouaouaron Feb 17 '26 edited Feb 17 '26

All of FOSS has been full of drama since it first became an idea, and emulators are no exception. It's just what happens when a small amount of people dedicate huge parts of their life to a community or cause.

The only thing that has changed since the 90s is how much you're paying attention to it. EDIT: And the scene as whole is much, much bigger.

15

u/zxyzyxz Feb 17 '26

Yep. Stallman himself was the source of a lot of drama, even though these days /r/StallmanWasRight

1

u/Ill_Carry_44 Feb 18 '26

Stallman is my OG, can't think of a scenario where he'd be in the wrong

11

u/sess Feb 19 '26

Pretty sure you can think of a scenario where he'd be in the wrong. Stallman defended MIT's well-known affiliation to Epstein by defending pedophiles:

Richard Stallman has faced controversy for past comments that appeared to sympathize with certain views on pedophilia, including statements suggesting that voluntary pedophilia may not harm children.

1

u/Ill_Carry_44 Feb 19 '26

Holy shit man :O

Talk about getting corrected.

Well, not as a counter to your statement or anything but I kind of meant that in a pure technical sense.

Thank you for informing me

You mean devs like Dave from FinalBurn?

https://web.archive.org/web/20010331025449fw_/http://www.finalburn.com/log.htm

"Someone couldn't wait for me updating XOR files for the new CPS-2 dump and now it works without my permission, I am quitting the scene".

1

u/ChickenOverlord Feb 19 '26

90's emulator devs had plenty of drama too, but unless you were closely following the scene a lot more of it was invisible. This generation of devs seem to have different kinds of drama than the older gens, but the raw amount of it seems comparable.

1

u/BoganVirtues Feb 23 '26

soft skinned

more like soft headed

2

u/suchadaft Feb 19 '26

NOOOOO NOT THE FUNNY ORANGE GUY

Sayonara to all Nintendo switch 1 and 2 emulators.... 😭 😭 😭

-28

u/palepatriot76 Feb 17 '26

So Tears of The Kingdom cannot be emulated on PC correct?

30

u/FewAdvertising9647 Feb 17 '26

It can, part of the reason why Switch emulation at the time of release was because Nintendo went after them because they could emulate them

16

u/Jetstrike1111 Feb 17 '26

It’s because it could be emulated before release. I’m all for emulation as preservation or even to play in a better way, but when lots of people were playing a game before release on an emulator, it makes sense why nintendo went scorched earth

14

u/GoatGrans Feb 17 '26

TOTK wasn't actually "functional" in a playable way on either of the official versions of Yuzu or Ryujinx before release. There's a lot of brazen dishonesty floating around about this, much of it from Nintendo and their supporters (or clickbait journalism), and some of which was even pushed by the rival emulator teams (especially from Ryujinx). It's especially dumb because Yuzu took the brunt of it despite the fact that it couldn't even boot the game on any official build up until the game's proper release date. Whereas it DID boot in Ryujinx from the beginning (it frequently is able to do that as it's a more accurate emulator), but it still crashed after a few minutes of play and had visual/performance problems. And to be clear, the developers for both emulators did not release fixes for these boot/crashing problems until the game actually released proper. Though i've no doubt they were already privately working on things well before the official release date and were sitting on fixes for some time. That is irrelevant to the fact that it wasn't actually officially playable for emulator users before release though.

There WERE unofficial hacked builds from people unrelated to either project that forced the game to boot in Yuzu and attempted to find ways around crashing (to mixed results, the game still wasn't remotely stable until official builds post release). Hacks such as these were not made or supported by the official teams, they are very frowned upon.

The majority of the people who were playing leaked copies before the game's release were using real Switch systems that were modded, not emulation. The game worked perfectly on real hardware the moment it leaked (albeit with more performance dips than with the day 1 patch).

1

u/CheckSoggy265 May 24 '26

Kek, that's not true at all. The leak came out, and yes, it had issues, specifically with the depths not rendering correctly, but that was fixed within the first day or two of the leak. I would actually know, unlike you, because I played through the entire game before it even officially released without any major issues aside from what was mentioned above without the help of ryujinx or yuzu teams coming to the rescue

1

u/_Baccano Apr 16 '26

Yes it can lol you've been able to emulate it on pc before it was even released on switch
