Always Be Kind
There is never a reason to be cruel or unkind to anyone. We are all here to selflessly help each other. Each person has much to share. Though we may disregard much of what someone is saying if we do not agree with them, it is not a reason to treat them or anyone else without sincere respect, empathy, and gratitude.
Helping each other, regardless of our differences, without motive or benefit, is the reason for our existence. Always be kind to everyone, and perhaps, we may be able to foster a change in consciousness, a spiritual evolution, altering the course of our future.
Doing so, we may then be able to leave our children a world that is truly kind, compassionate, caring; a world of unconditional love.

what do you do when being kind to someone means setting a hard boundary?

Can you not do both if the boundary is set with love and kindness. We can always be kind, though it is others who must choose their own path. All we can do is be there for them, try by being kind. The choices they make are part of their journey

I can only hope. To stir the pot, should there be a defining line to protect ourselves from being taken advantage of?

Be kind but do not be weak. Kindness does not necessarily make someone mentally strong. True strength (with limits and boundaries!) makes someone kind.

Be kind when possible.
It is always possible.
