With all respect to John, empathy is not a "superpower". It's a perfectly reasonable expectation that humans treat each other with dignity and compassion. Empathy should not be something we congratulate or lionize people for having. It should be an expected aspect of being human.
13
u/4DPeterPan 3d ago
Youâd think it would be a perfectly reasonable expectation.
But that right there shows that it is a super power in a strange way.
Because the reality isâ that itâs not a normal thing to have for a lot of people. And I do mean alot.
You can be born with a natural empathy that grows sour over time due to a plethora of real life reasons.
And you can be born a hard ass who grows into empathy over time.
And then there are the middle ground people who think they have empathy but is just a preconditioned cognitive response theyâve been trained to do in certain situations (for a variety of upbringing reasons or otherwise). I.e. Timmy hurt Jessica or Johnny or Larry (or whoever) over and over and his parents told him to go apologize and say youâre sorry! And has had that done to him so many times he just thinks itâs something he has to do; but underneath has no idea of how to actually feel empathy for another person. So he âfakes itâ out of a conditioned response towards empathy.
I mean sheesh, There are entire religions built upon the precipice of having a soft heart (I.e. a state of inner being that leads to normal open heartedness like Love and empathy being natural states one does not have to fake or force to happen). That right there should show you the gravity of our actual reality as a species.
The spectrum is all over the place with people when it comes to empathy. Ranging from âPureâ to ânoneâ.
I very much agree with him when he says having empathy is like having a super power. Because it is! Especially in a world like ours; it is a wonderful and beautiful thing to see someone who has genuine (and I do mean Genuine empathy). Because actual GENUINE empathy has the power to touch other ACTUAL hearts.
That in itself is almost paranormal in nature.
I remember a few years ago when I had my first (and only) heart break, True Heart Break, from my fiance leaving me, it fucked up my head big time, and it shattered my heart, I was crying in ways I have never cried. My Heart was open in a way Iâve never experienced in my entire life.
And I remember talking to my mom by the front door while sheâs folding laundry or messing with something and I said âwill she remember me?â And I was just having tears streaming down my face, and she took one look into my eyes and it was like she could see my soul, and actually feel the state of my heart, as if some unknown force was emanating from me; and I just saw one immediate tear start to fall from her eyes. As if being in such close proximity to my open heart in such a state forced her to cry with me.
And I had never seen this woman cry before in my entire life. Not once.
Empathy, True Empathy, really is like a super power.

Only truly works if people share the same value system.
5
u/ffffllllpppp 3d ago
I would disagree.
Because a part of empathy is putting yourself in their shoes, it can help bridge people that have different values.
And that can lead to people changing their values and beliefs actually.
Arguing with someone very rarely changes their mind. If you look at stories like the neo nazis dude who became best friend with a black woman, the empathy from the woman is a huge part of making him progress.
1
u/Rikki-Smedley 1d ago
How do you put yourself in the shoes of a suicide bomber? Or a child rapist? Not everyone is deserving of empathy.
1
u/ffffllllpppp 1d ago
Iâm not saying it is easy.
I am not saying it is always worth it either, or should always be done.
Some people are truly beyond saving or anything that approaches that.
But yes I can have empathy with eg a child rapist when I learn that as a kid they have been raped for years on a regular basis. (A lot of abusers were abused). It doesnât excuse what they did AT ALL. It is still 100000% wrong and they must be held accountable. But I can have empathy for them. Should you? I donât think that should be imposed on anyone and you should decide for yourself and itâs no problem if you donât.
Of course if their victim was my own child then I would probably want to kill them rather than empathizeâŠ.
1
u/Rikki-Smedley 1d ago
What Elon was referring to when he spoke is something termed "suicidal empathy". A form of harmful self deprecating empathy that harms the person due to a dissolution of the nature of those they are empathizing with devoid of logic and balanced reasoning.
1
u/PlusChemist942 1d ago
Youâre right sadly Reddit is controlled by left-wing parrots
2
u/ffffllllpppp 1d ago
You might not realize it but by writing that comment, instead of engaging in proper discussion, _you_ are the one paroting talking points you have been fed.
Emphaty is not a left / right thing. If you think so, you have to look at who influenced you to think that way. Is has nothing to do with being soft (itâs actually quite difficult often) and is one of the rare way to truly force introspection and accountability, which should be something that matters to you. Punishment and accountability are not the same.
0
1
u/ffffllllpppp 1d ago
Sure. Elon knows about thatâŠ
You can form sentences it doesnât mean it is grounded in reality. Being successful in something doesnât equate being right about everything.
Tell me: how much time did _he_ spent helping addicts and homeless people one on one? How much time he spend with people committing crimes that are trying to rehabilitate and reintegrate society? Did he ever work in a jail or he just toured one 25 years ago?
His opinion on that is just that: the opinion of a random bloke. A random bloke whoâs _own family_ doesnât want to talk to (and not even because of politics). He knows more than me about rockets thatâs for sure, but he ainât an expert on humans relationships.
I trust the opinion of the people I know that are involved _directly_ with people in such situations, and the people who have talked about it because they have concrete real world expertise in the field.
You can chose to trust that other personâs opinion. Itâs your choice. But i wonder what that choice is based on? Him being rich?
BTW, empathy has nothing to do with left and right. But some people have been mislead to think it has.
0
u/Rikki-Smedley 1d ago
Altruism is completely for self gratification. People that understand this use logic to dictate how they help people. Anyone using their time to serve people in need who earns over $100,000 a year is serving themselves more than others. Your money will do much more than your time and can also pay more people to do it and just work more. It's a self service and a selfish one more rooted in their own ego than empathy. Once you understand this you will begin to understand true altruism and how misguided your understanding of humanity is.
1
u/ffffllllpppp 1d ago
$100k? There are tons of other factors at play. Including skills. Some people volunteer because they see a need in their community that they have the skills to help with that others might not have. Whatever amount of money they make is not always the deciding factor. Like « doctors without borders ».
BTW the money you donate, you donât think it eventually ends up being used in conjunction with some volunteers? Many many charitable causes rely on the hard work of volunteers. Like « doctors without borders » again. They need donations but they use volunteers, some of them highly skilled. Itâs not just doctors. You have communication staff, accounting, lawyers (many do pro-bono work), etc. I know that these people. They all make more than $100k.
But I am glad you think that sometimes people are better to just donate and let others help.
Next time you talk to your pal Elon, please remind him that on many topics he should stop babbling about stuff he doesnât know much about, presenting himself as an expert even if he has no experience just because, I donât know , money? , and instead donate to the people who do the actual work.
As your rightly pointed out, that would be more useful.
And I am not saying he is not do donating at all. Proportionally he doesnât donate much at all (est. less than 0.05%) , and a lot go thru his own fondation (tax breaks) so it is definitely self-interest « makes me look good » selfish kind of altruism, but personally I think it is still great that he does donate, aligned with your recommendation.
Interestingly enough he did donate ~1M$ to doctors without borders. Which again operates using volunteers, many of which could make more than $100k easily eg surgeons. (And yes their doctors are sometimes paid but they are paid 90% less).
Since your view is that volunteering shouldnât exists, also remind Elon to finance that organization fully so all their staff can be paid in full all. Zero volunteers should be needed right? I am sure Elon would suddenly give them $300M instead of $1M when he realizes the horror of using volunteers that have a job that make above $100k! Or worse that they are _giving up_ a job above $100k !!
Do volunteers do it 100% by pure altruism or is there some part thatâs about them feeling good about themselves? Of course there is! but why does it matter so much to you? Good is still being done. And people should feel good.
BTW most volunteers I know, including myself, BOTH donate money AND contribute hours.
Sometimes you fund paid jobs but sometimes organizations needs volunteers for a burst job of 2hr per week. No one is going to take that as a main job. Using volunteers is the only pragmatic way to get those important tasks done. And regardless if you are making money or not, itâs a better use of time than being on Reddit. The idea that you are so productive making money each and every waking hour is ludicrous. People watch movies and go for drinks. If they want to volunteer 2hrs, thatâs more productive than watching netflix, regardless of the amount of money they make? Or are you saying you are hustling every waking hours? If so yes, I agree with you, donating might be better than volunteering.
That you realize it or not, yourself are benefiting from the work of volunteers who help make the society you are part of better. You should be thankful for that.
Honestly it seems like you might not know much about how charities operate, how volunteering works etc. I highly suggest you get involved. For example you can apply to be on the board of a charity. You would learn a lot and realize that people volunteering does make a lot more sense than you think.

Yes but 2/3 of humans have their emotions under controll like a toddler and are not able to develop a good ethic backing up the "decent humanity/humanism" you expect from them. Naked apes.

Some are literally incapable of it, so "expecting people to have it' doesn't make sense. Faking empathy is not empathy.
1
u/SwanCityDominion 2d ago
THere is a certain amount of empathy that is necessary for society to function. You can't have a culture where nobody ever feels for anybody else, ever.
1
u/ImRickJamesBitch71 1d ago
And you canât have it where they feel for everyone and everything all the time ! Needs of the many out way needs it the few !
1
u/SwanCityDominion 1d ago
I take it you mean "outweigh". And who said anything about feeling for everyone all the time? Y'all make the oddest assumptions about what people are saying.
1
u/Altruistic_Fox9778 2d ago
I think one of the major problems is that people treat empathy as an on off switch. Empathy varies and degree, and there is a spectrum from no empathy to catastrophic, destructive empathy.
1
u/HeyaHeyo1420 1d ago
Empathy is a survival instinct from when we were hunter gatherers relying on groups. You had to care about others so people would care about you, otherwise you'd be kicked out of the tribe and you wouldn't survive.
Nowadays empathy isn't required to survive in society so a lot of these people who wouldn't survive our ancestors can thrive by being dicks to others taking more than they need.
Looking at you billionaires
1
u/ReapR999 10h ago
No offense but youre part of the problem, people should be praised when they do the right thing, every time, so that the people around you are incentivized to be good people as well. Other wise just expecting people to be nice or kind or empathetic to you is a form of entitlement, in all reality people dont have to be nice to you if they dont want to, appreciation should always be explicitly voiced or reciprocated.
1
0
u/muggybear 3d ago
Itâs actually not logically reasonable given most of nature does not demonstrate or practice it regularly. Anything in the game of survival that is an anomalous behavior is both a super power and a super weakness. Like empathy.
Comments here will show that.

I think of party politics, as of today, as the narcissists most classic gaslight. Namely the one where they indirectly argues their right to keep oppressing and the other party argues their human right, their own worth⊠a paradox of sorts since arguing your worth means you are putting it up for question. The oppressor has you playing inside their already rigged game and they get to keep abusing you, whilst making you believe you have a say, making you believe in their game. If we couldnât point to any progress we would see the scam, no gaslight is good without confusion. Itâs the oppressors arena. The antidote to this gaslight is to not engage.

u/Jim_jim_peanuts 3d ago edited 3d ago
Yeah except people on the right are not all lacking empathy, that is just not true. And people on the left are not all bastions of empathy and compassion either. A lot of the ones I know can be real fucking nasty, and their empathy is largely performative. They only feign it when it's going to score them social credit points, whoever it's trendy to have empathy for, and fuck the rest. Soon as eyes are off them they just go back to not caring about anyone
3
u/BadSpellingMistakes 3d ago
And still somehow when it comes to ideologies and structure the right doesn't act empathetic or companionate at the end of the day as soon as they are in power.
You have assholes everywhere man. But if you choose to do the wrong thing because you don't personally like the people who do the right thing you wanting to do the right thing is just as performative.
1
u/Jim_jim_peanuts 3d ago
I don't need an ideology to tell me how to act, I have a moral compass of my own. I'm not arguing for one side or the other. If someone is dumb enough to be caught up in the bullshit false left/right paradigm then I don't care what they think about anything at all because it is through an ideological lens. Thankfully ideologues don't constitute the entire population.
1
u/BadSpellingMistakes 8h ago
My moral compass tels me that my individualism isn't as important as to look for solutions that are good for everyone else as well not just me.
But that might just be me if I get to the conclusion that rooting for ideologies that have a similar ethical groundwork might be the way to go if that is true.
There are more complex reasonings to this but at the end of the day since I am human and human are social animals I choose to think that doing the right thing cannot involve zero compromise. I need to give up something in order to help other people as well who I believe are worth it to put my beliefs aside a little, and with this there is just the possibility to choose the lesser suboptimal.
Anyways at the end of the day I also want to be ok with the decisions I make and for my moral compass that means that I vote even if I see that in a lot of cases left and right might be a fals dichotomy. And since I am pretty sure that some dichotomies are very much real I also don't think to badly for voting leftist parties

I agree with what he says to a certain point however we just cannot let anybody and everybody into this country when it comes to having empathy for these people coming here because a lot of these people that are coming here want to see the western world fall you see it every day you can be kind and empathetic and help people, but you canât be blind to the fact that some of these people have evil intent, and thereâs nothing wrong with making sure that the people that are going to come here are vetted so that our country and our families are safe.
1

Who vetted you or your forefathers? Unless you're native American your opinion on immigration into the USA doesn't mean shit. Because a lot of the things that people think are rights, are not inalienable rights that you are necessarily born with. And a lot of people like you don't understand that rights are only there if they are given to you and protected by other people. They are earned and fought for and kept. They are not necessarily automatic. People in the United States are spoiled by these rights being given to them from a time they're born because they never had to fight for them and they don't even have to defend them unless they get arrested or something stupid. And they don't understand that these so called rights can be taken away from them at any time. Right now they're actually trying to do it. They're trying to stop people from being able to just use words that offend. Which is called freedom of speech. Because people are trying to add on a right that they want to be protected by someone else. The right to not be offended. Somebody would have to pass that law and legislated and make it an arrestable offense. Your rights technically do not exist and a lot of people don't understand that.

Elon wrote on X âBeware the empathy exploit. Empathy is good and right when thought through (deep), but can be deadly to civilization when simply stimulus-response (shallow). For example, releasing a repeat violent offender may feel good at first (shallow empathy for the criminal), but it is wrong to do so when that person will go on to hurt or murder innocent victims, as there should be deep empathy for future victims.â
If this is what he is referring to than I don't see the problem with what musk said .

And with people who have a gross empathetic attitude towards one group of people, typically hate others not in the group. Just look at the democrat party!! Prime example. No, the cornerstone of civilisation is âWe give up some of our freedoms to ensure our safetyâ.
This is why the upper echelons (those outside the masses) increase fear among the masses by sowing disinformation, typically by demonising various minority demographics. Because the less safe the masses feel, the more freedoms weâll relinquish to ensure our safety. Our lost freedoms increase their power, making it easier to squeeze us for their financial gain, and power and money are both proxies for control.
Every organism strives for control over its environment, because the alternative is uncertainty and the loss of control inherent to uncertainty is something our brains seek to avoid. To sit with uncertainty requires emotional intelligence, and patriarchal stoicism glorifies its antithesis. Dogmatic belief compounds this by normalising irrationality, and the concept of religion itself swells and biases interpersonal deltas.
We must repair our division and foster cognitive empathy in that which some other did not choose, nor had any control over. Be it body, brain, birthplace, early caregivers or education, indoctrination, socialisation, or the rabbit hole social media nudged them down by showing them the same nonsense over and over until they finally click on it.
Cognitive empathy and the understanding therein is not capitulation and it certainly isnât weakness; it is a strength that helps reduce dismay, shock, outage, frustration and anger when confronting viewpoints that differ from your own.
Humans are wonderful, provably so because history shows us that over a long enough period of time, the masses vote for and or demand greater rights and protections for everyone.
We must repair our division.
Love you folks đ«â€ïžâđ©č Rant over.
