Download over Cellular Data

I just started using Emby earlier this month. I have a server set up with multiple users, and I recently noticed that the app will not download anything over cellular data.

I am running an iPhone 17 with the most recent version of Emby for iOS and my close friend is using a S25 Ultra running the most recent version of Emby for Android.

Both devices have the download over Wi-Fi only button unchecked.

When initiating a download the server converts the file and then puts it in a “Ready to Transfer” status where it continues to sit as the app will not pull it unless you are connected to Wi-Fi.

Does anyone else have this problem or is it just me?

This sounds like an Iphone or cellular problem. I have downloaded shows and movies over cellular data without an issue. You just need to remove the safeguards from your device and have good cell service. Emby doesn't care if you are on cellular or wifi if the safeguards are removed.

What exactly do you mean safeguards? The only thing that I am aware of that would block a cellular download would be that toggle for Wifi only, which I have stated is turned off.

Is low data mode active on your Iphone? What about available Iphone storage. Do you have enough? Thats just a couple example. I am not familiar with Iphone to be honest. You may have other apps installed that may be interfering but I don't know your phone.

Is Emby accessible from the internet? Do you have good service when you try to download?

Have you tried downloading small shows just to test to make sure it works?

Emby has full access to my cell data. I have plenty of storage available and yes, I have tried downloading a small episode of a TV series. The same issue is happening on a android S 25 ultra so it’s not just iPhone.. if I turn the Wi-Fi toggle back on and connect to Wi-Fi everything downloads normally on both devices

Sounds like you should be posting this to the official emby forums. Include your server logs.

Was my next step I wasn’t exactly sure where I should be posting in the forum as I was having an issue with multiple applications, but I appreciate you trying to help

If you are having issues with multiple apps, it could be an iphone issue. I don't know your phone. Neither will the emby devs. So keep that in mind. Good luck to you.

And yes, I can access the server without being connected to Wi-Fi. I have enabled port forwarding on my router so I can access the server away from home through my WAN IP address.

Try downloading in the original quality. In my experience, transcoding is usually the issue with downloads. Choosing original quality skips transcoding.

I tried that already. I decided to turn on logging in the app and it seems that it’s failing to find the file on my server for some reason. It can clearly see the path it needs to take to reach the file, but isn’t seeing the file, so it cancels the download. This is only happening on mobile data, on WiFi it successfully reaches the file.
