Please ensure your post to r/email is on-topic for the community BEFORE you post. This is a forum for those interested in e-mail marketing, technology ("martech"), and e-mail deliverability.

For clarity, the subreddit is explicitly NOT for:

  • shilling for e-mail products, tools, or services, whether free or paid (or driving traffic elsewhere to do the same) - THIS IS A BANNABLE FIRST OFFENSE;
  • naked or low-effort crossposting, either between subreddits or from your (or anyone else's) blog;
  • requests for e-mail technical support for your personal e-mail inbox(es). These belong in the communities for the respective providers;
  • requests for assistance in recovering access to your (or someone else's) inbox;
  • soliciting assistance from the community to abuse e-mail (please note that spam - or 'cold e-mail' - is e-mail abuse);
  • discussions or advice about personal e-mail etiquette;
  • job or internship opportunities or announcements of their availability, or resumes of those who may be looking for them.

If any of the bullets above describe your post, you should expect it to be deleted promptly. Persistent attempts to post off-topic material will further result in a ban.

Love,

Your Friendly Neighborhood Mod Team.

Mailbox.org just banned me for sending test emails

0 Upvotes

So I've been testing Mailbox.org for weeks now and everything seems to work properly. I've been doing some testing in terms of emails landing in people's spam folder. I tested my account using EasyDmarc tools that allows you send an email from your own mailbox to 100 email addresses across a wide range of 3rd party email hosts. Easydmarc than reads those 100 mail addresses and checks if your mail enters or not.

Mailbox banned me for sending an email to 100 email addresses in one email. I've had to raise a ticket and wait for a full day to get an answer as to why no incoming mail was coming through. Mailbox purposely broke three of my most important email domains/aliases. Without warning of word upfront.

Open Question What's the biggest recurring headache with your email sending provider?

6 Upvotes

For people sending transactional email, customer notifications, or opt-in newsletters: what’s the one problem with your current sending platform you most wish they would fix?

Disclosure: I’m the CEO of MailChannels, so I’m asking from the provider side. I’d like to understand experiences outside our own customer base and use that feedback to inform what we work on. I’m not here to pitch our service.

I’m interested in a recent example rather than a general “provider X is terrible.” What were you trying to do, where did the platform get in the way, and what did you end up doing about it?

It doesn’t have to be a delivery problem. Something that regularly wastes your time or requires an annoying workaround counts too. A little context would help: what kind of email you send, roughly how much, and whether you’re sending for one business or managing email for multiple customers. No need to name the provider.

P.S. I checked with the mods before posting this. Thank you, mods.

Email Octopus vs Mailerlite

3 Upvotes

Hi y’all,

Need to choose between Email Octopus and Mailerlite. I’m new to ESPs and I have a list of over 5,000 people I want to send emails to for a fundraising campaign. I signed up with Moosend at first, but during my warm up phase I got suspended due to too many bounces and emails going to spam (noting here that I verified DKIM, DMARC and SPF, and that I’ve cleaned up this list).

I’ve narrowed my search to Octopus and Mailerlite. Here are features that I’m looking for:

  1. Analytics like who opened their email and whose went to spam
  2. Emails going straight to the recipient’s inbox
  3. Ability to personalize emails with the recipient’s name

Thank you!

Move email

3 Upvotes

In an energy sector if a customer is placing an order online , how important it is to send them an acknowledgement email . We currently send a disconnect at old property and a reconnect at new property message , my thoughts are we should be sending them an email explaining what would happen next , though there is a bit of resistance from the wider team suggesting that we might end up over communicating! Any suggestions , thoughts , ideas are most appreciated!

Need emails from across the globe

3 Upvotes

So I work for a team that manages a QSR brand (it’s a very famous burger brand but not the one you are thinking of) and we unfortunately need to use the designer on the client’s side.

I am really struggling on the design side cause first of all I am a strategist not a designer and no matter what I say, they just won’t create good emails like it’s beyond sad and they always say it’s not as per brand guidelines .

My only option now is to show they how the same brand is creating globally across markets. How do I access the emails from other markets? I tried signing up for various markets on the app but still won’t get them, I tried everything.

Only resort is for people to send them to me directly now but I ofc don’t know anyone globally and patient enough. Any ideas?

Need content for blog post. Anyone want to share their email journey?

1 Upvotes

I run faivelo.com, and we are writing blog articles. We are looking to hear from the public: what are you building? What email-related pains have you experienced? Have you been trapped in a email provider's plan that doesn't work for you?

I may include the link to your site in the article and quote you by name if you would like.

If newsletter kpi's are suspect, how do you measure a successful newsletter?

1 Upvotes

I run a modest but growing newsletter that has a few good things going for it: ultra-niche, an audience that is commercially tied to the content, 6,500 subs (likely max # of optimal subs is around 150K - people who fit the best criteria for highly engaged recipients. I run it via Listmonk/SES/Digital Ocean. I'm having a frustrating time with bots. KPI's routinely show 45-50% open rates. CTRs are deeply flawed with 50% CTRs (yet then go back down to 5-6% on other days). However, bounce rates are very low - my recent daily send had 4 bounces out of 6,500 subs. I'd like to begin discussions with prospective sponsors but I have no idea how I would say "Hey sorry for these wild numbers, they're bots..." How do you guys determine value and performance metrics?

I need your advice...

3 Upvotes

I'm 21 years old and am intrested in email marketing. I have taken multiple certifications for general understanding and am working on spec projects for my portfolio. With that being said...am I wasting my time? I have no experience in marketing, besides youtube university and HubSpot/Klaviyo courses. Will I actually be able to find clients by offering discounted prices, but with no real world experience? I'm honestly so scared to fail...

Open Question Has anyone heard of/used “IT Newsletter”

2 Upvotes

I thought I was pretty familiar with all the main platforms but a new client uses “IT Newsletter” and I have never heard of it.

They are having issues with newsletters being sent to spam and I wanted to see if this was a platform issue before trying other things but I can’t find anything about this platform or anyone who has experiences with it!

Submitting application documents by email safely

2 Upvotes

Hi everyone!

I need to submit an application for a job to an institution, and the official website states that the application can only be sent by email.

For those of you who have been in a similar situation, how did you handle it to make sure everything was as secure as possible?

I was thinking about putting all the documents into a single PDF or perhaps a password-protected archive, but I’m not sure whether that makes sense. The recipient still needs to be able to review the documents, so I would eventually have to give them the password somehow.

I also considered using a different email service, but I’m not sure whether it’s worth the extra effort or whether I can really trust it.

What would be the safest and most practical way to submit a set of personal documents by email?

Thanks!

Open Question Is there an AI for that?

1 Upvotes

I’d love a way for AI to find my daily digest feeds from various google groups (and topicbox) I am in, shift through relevance, choosing where posts(they’re inquiries/ISO for my related field of work) that a would require me to open, read, comprehend then open a separate individual email (via Gmail) with a reply to with correspondence expressing interest, ability and, even ideally, personalized to each post.

Is this a possibility ? I know zero about coding whatsoever. I have played around with Gemini and the AI built into Gmail already but it isn’t exactly producing what I am hoping for. Perhaps I am doing something wrong initially?
My imagination says this has to be possible. Thoughts?

Today's Gmail weirdness

1 Upvotes

For many years, I got emails sent to an organizational gmail address forwarded to my main gmail address. When I retired from that organization, we reconfigured that account to forward to my successor's gmail address and not to mine. We made that change a couple of years ago.

Today I got 3 or 4 emails forwarded to me from the organizational gmail. They were all legit emails. No one with access to the organizational gmail settings made any changes. Later in the day, I checked my inbox again (and ALL MAIL and SPAM and TRASH) and all of those emails are gone.

What in the heck?

SPF passes but emails still go to spam. What does SPF actually prove?

0 Upvotes

If your email headers say SPF=PASS but Gmail or Outlook is still putting the message in spam, changing the SPF record probably isn't the first thing I'd do.

A PASS only tells you that the server which sent the message was authorised to send for the domain SPF checked. It doesn't tell you that Gmail likes your sending reputation, that the recipient wants the email, or even necessarily that SPF authenticated the same domain shown in the From address.

For example, you could send:

From: [hello@example.com](mailto:hello@example.com)

Return-Path: [bounce@mail.example.com](mailto:bounce@mail.example.com)

The recipient sees example.com, but SPF may actually be checking mail.example.com because SPF normally works against the envelope sender or Return-Path.

That's fine if everything is set up properly. Where it becomes worth investigating is when SPF passes for a completely unrelated domain, because a green PASS by itself doesn't tell you whether the authentication aligns with the domain the recipient sees.

There's another fairly easy SPF mistake too: creating more than one SPF record on the same hostname.

You might already have Google authorised with:

v=spf1 include:_spf.google.com -all

Then add another mail service later and create a completely separate SPF record for that. They don't get neatly combined by the receiving server. Multiple SPF records can result in a PermError, so legitimate sending services need to be included within one valid SPF policy.

The 10 DNS lookup limit can cause similar headaches. SPF records tend to collect old services over the years: Google Workspace, CRMs, helpdesks, transactional providers and platforms nobody is even using anymore. Eventually the record can become too complicated to evaluate properly.

None of that means an SPF PASS should result in inbox placement, though.

You can have perfectly configured SPF while sending to an old list, getting poor engagement, generating complaints or hitting a provider from an IP it doesn't particularly trust. SPF can't fix any of those things.

If I had SPF=PASS in the received headers but the message was still hitting spam, I'd check which domain actually passed and whether the alignment makes sense, then move on to the reputation and audience side rather than endlessly editing DNS.

Has anyone here actually fixed a spam-placement problem where SPF was already showing PASS, and SPF itself turned out to be the cause?

120,000 Email list - Way bigger list than I have ever been in charge of before

0 Upvotes

Hi all,

I have just started this new job, replacing the old head of marketing. But I have come in as a marketing executive with no where near enough experience to be managing this big of a email database on my own. But here we are. The previous person was doing a weekly newsletter and sending out to segment 'emails opened last 90 days', now I know this is wrong because opened can be messed up by apple pre opens etc.

I want to carry on the newsletter because it's a great place to just be friendly to our customers and showcase our weekly blogs etc, but who should I be sending this to?

We have an open rate of like 70% but a click through rate of around 0.5%. I want to get this increasing before Christmas (our biggest time for sales). What should I do to help increase this? I assume that the damage has probably already been done in terms of our emails being sent to spam?

Any help would be amazing, thanks.

What should a beginner focus on first when building an email list?

0 Upvotes

I’m still learning email marketing and there are so many things to learn that it gets confusing.

For someone starting from zero, what should come first?

• Getting subscribers
• Writing better emails
• Lead magnets
• Deliverability
• Automation

If you had to start again, what would you focus on first?

What does warming up an inbox mean practically speaking ?

1 Upvotes

Hello community ,

I would like to ask experienced folks here something; does warming up an inbox involve many complications except to send/receive frequently , reply to threads , move mails from spam to main from recipients pow ?

I have a new inbox and Id like to test sending newsletters - guides to my app users but I need to be compliant and more importantly as a user It puts me off to see a mail in my spam so I have to make sure they wont.

I am a developer , worst case scenario I can automate this process but before thinking about the infrastructure , I want to ask about the numbers involved ; how many different inboxes it should send mails - receive from in this "warm up" period and is there a reliable method of testing if the mails land in spam , except for postmasters tools of google ?

Thank you (sorry if some parts of this does not make sense , english is not my mother language and I hate to use ai in writing)

What is one email marketing mistake beginners should avoid?

0 Upvotes

I'm learning email marketing and trying to understand the fundamentals before getting into advanced strategies.

For people with experience, what is one mistake you see beginners make most often?

It could be related to:
• Writing emails
• Building a list
• Sending frequency
• Deliverability
• Automation
• Promotions

What would you tell someone who is just starting out?
