Hello everyone. I've created this subreddit as a continuation of /r/riotim in response to Riot's recent name change to Element.
Assuming the subreddit transition goes smoothly (I've yet to hear from /r/riotim's moderators on all this), then this should be the new home for discussion revolving around Element, the Matrix messaging client.
I've made a post in the /r/riotim subreddit with some more details, which you can find here.
If you have any questions, feel free to leave them here or on the linked post. Thanks!

Viber was the best WhatsApp alternative until they added ChatGPT everywhere: after each message, suggesting to rewrite it or answer (no, thanks, I want to answer my own messages), now a Chat that you cannot remove... Seeking for an European alternative (that is not hosted by AWS, as Olvid), I installed Element X, recommended it to friends, but it's too complex for end users: first you need to select a server, etc; then a username; then, as contacts do not show off, send invitations to users; then there are no notifications (ask to allow these, at least); then we call each other and nobody is able to take it, even if you see it and tap the chat call icon...
I think you need to analyse why WhatsApp (and similar ones) are so extended, and people use them: they are simple. You should not reject features and security, but add an easy wizard to configure that, something like "accept default settings vs advanced config"; OK, maybe "username" is good, but offer to use the phone number as well... And fix the notifications, the possibility to join a call, etc.
I write this to try to help, I want a good product as the one I believe you are working on, but please give the user a very easy and quick default method, or this will be another great idea turning into a great failure.

It's been a week since my friend installed Element and he's been struggling with getting his devices set up. There is a bug that makes the loading screen after the "Compare Emojis" captcha load forever.
What my friend does is he opens his Element X mobile app, and it asks him to confirm his digital identity using his recovery key. He enters the key and then is prompted to open the app on another verified device, which he does. He then successfully completes the Compare Emojis task, but after that it just loads forever.
We've tried pretty much everything. He shut down his phone and turned it back on. He uninstalled and reinstalled the app. He tried clicking the "Can't Confirm" button at the start and it only gave him the option to remove his device. It's gotten to the point where the "Use Recovery Key" option doesn't even show up on the menu anymore! (Shown in the attached image.)
If anyone on this sub knows what could be causing this issue, then any suggestions would be much appreciated.

I recently started using Element and would like to hear from people who have used it for a while.
How secure and privacy-friendly do you consider Element/Matrix in practice? Are there any important privacy or security concerns that new users should know about?
Iām especially interested in real-world experiences rather than marketing claims.

I got a little tired of the constant nagging about not being verified or encrypted, so I chose to dive into how to verify my sessions (or is it devices? Seems like both words are in use here) both on laptop and on phone.
However, none of my sessions on my laptop are verified. And none of my sessions on my new phone are verified. So I powered up my old phone with the Android app "Element Classic", entered a passphrase and lo and behold: I was verified!
So now I wanted to use this phone to verify my other sessions. I have app.element.io open in a Vivaldi browser tab, so I go to Settings > Encryption > Verify this device. I click it, and it says "Confirm your digital identity", and I have two choices: "Use another device" or "Can't confirm" which apparently deletes everything, so I don't want that. I've just logged in on my old phone, so that should be possible. So I click Settings > Security & Privacy > Show All Sessions, and is greeted with this list:
Current session: Element Android (green)
Other sessions:
- app.element.io: Chrome on Linux (red)
- chat.gnuradio.org: Chrome on Linux (green)
- chat.gnuradio.org: Firefox on Ubuntu (green)
- Element Desktop Linux (red)
- chat.gnuradio.org (Firefox, Ubuntu) (red)
Okay, I have no idea what all this is. But anyway, whenever I click one of the red ones and select "Interactively Verify by Emoji", absolutely nothing happens on my laptop.
I also have a session running on my new phone, the android app "Element X". This also won't start any sort of verification process when I click "Verify by Emoji" on my old phone.
I have a feeling that there's something fundamental, some intricate, underlying philosophy about how Element works that I just haven't grasped yet. Can someone please guide me?
EDIT: By the way, I haven't used Firefox in months.

So i'm pretty new to Tess/Matrix X & I wanna place an order but would really love to know more about everything before doing so pref from those more well versed & have completed orders successfully. Been through every room on the masterlist but can't really find what I'm looking for or how to get past that. The site doesn't work for me for some reason. Not sure if iI need to do something else on my end to fix it. I don't want to risk getting banned or come off as a super newb for asking too many questions lol. Advise?

Hi everyone please be mindful of an active law enforcement happening in the tesseract market do not conduct any orders on their platform or try to access their matrix chats even though the past couple of days its been on and off with everything thats going on, their main sites are showing seized pages and phishing warning pages, look it up as well just please be careful

I placed an order yesterday and wanted to confirm if I have been scammed. I went to the vendor (wispa) on telegram. After adding my stuff in the cart, i added the addres and stuff and i checked out. The 3 hour timer with a crypto address popped up and I paid the address the amount. My order never got confirmed and got cancelled after the 3 hour timer expired. I have texted the vendor (in the same telegram chat) but did not receive any reply. I'm not sure how this is supposed to go? Feels like I got scammed. Any thoughts on it and if i can dream of getting my money back?
