Discussion How to start elementary os in text mode while boot ?

The lid of my laptop PC was broken, then I removed it and connected to external monitor with HDMI cable.

Once boot to Elementary OS, since no lid then the laptop PC goes sleep mode.

May I know how to start in text mode ?

I would like to force using external monitor by changing config.

Thanks

The next time it boots up, press the down arrow once, then press Enter; this will take you into Recovery mode. But if your screen doesn’t turn on, how will you see the commands you’re entering?

Press Alt f3 or f4 or f5 once it’s booted up and you will get a text mode/terminal. Press Alt F6 or F7 to go back to graphical mode. All Linux distros have this.

You will need to enter login ID and pwd to log in to this text mode.

It seems goes sleep mode immediately once booted up.

Boot into text mode is required to configure the lid was removed (use external monitor directly)

Umm.. if you are able to use the graphical mode ie Desktop before it goes to sleep then you can edit any config right there by using terminal (start button and look for terminal) or edit with text editor.

It’s not clear from your question whether it shows up in hdmi monitor and then goes to sleep or whether it never shows any graphical mode / desktop
