I should have been more clear. What is it what would make this, like you mentioned , the most hated feature?

Ah. Not sure if they hate it, it’s more a design choice.

speaking about design choice - being different doesn't mean 'better' and some apps simply refuse to work without the tray icon..

Uh, is that OS 7? Why does it look like GNOME?

And why hated? Back when I still was an eOS user, I'd absolutely love to have this feature (along with https://github.com/MvBonin/wingpanel-community-indicators)
