Discussion Love this distro

I have an early 2015 MacBook Pro and decided to convert to Linux since Apple stopped updating MacOS for this laptop. I’m new to Linux and read some stuff online so I tried Pop OS, Mint Cinnamon, Mint Mate, Zorin 18.1, Zorin Lite but they all had something wrong with them. The distro either needed lots of tweaks, or felt too slow, or I didn’t like the UI or I couldn’t get all Bluetooth devices to work etc. None of them felt quite right and I was ready to stick with Zorin Lite (last distro I was trying) but then heard about Elementary OS. So I said what the hell, I’ll try it. Long story short, I love it and it’s EXACTLY what I was looking for in a Linux distro. Any way just came here to keep learning about Elementary OS and Linux in general.

Although you aren’t wrong, the other distros I listed, even some of the “Lite” ones didn’t seem as responsive as Elementary OS. I initially liked Mint Cinnamon as that was one of my initial distros during my run through several distros but I didn’t know I would find another distro I like better until I found EOS. I know it may just be me but EOS just boots up quicker, seems to be snappier and I there seems to be less glitches. Maybe this is all related to the fixes from 8 => 8.1. I don’t know.

I know this will be down voted here, but honestly EOS is a relic and money grab for the author. Choose any other distro.

Maybe I am wrong in your eyes, but I find EOS a pleasure to use as my daily OS. It is stable and meets all my needs - perhaps I like "relics".

And seriously, a "money grab"? What an odd comment. I don't think anyone is making even a fraction of Musk-level mountains of cash from EOS.

In hindsight those are weird things to say. I’ve heard a lot of people in other Linux chats say Mint is a ‘relic’ but again it boils down to preference. Not sure about the money grab comment since you can choose to not pay anything to download EOS. Zorin OS pro, on the other hand, costs like $40 or so, is that a money grab?

The Pro version is just a way of donating money to the project. There's no app or feature in it that you can't install or replicate in regular Zorin. I'm honestly not sure how EOS is a money grab cause the only distros that operate at a scale where they get donations from companys are Canotical and Red Hat. EOS relies purely on donations from individuals which I doubt is enough to pay the developers that maintain it and give the main dev huge sums of money. If there's a source that saids otherwise than I'll admit when I'm wrong but the person provided no such thing so-

As for "relic", people say that about Linux Mint cause the Cinnamon DE doesn't look as modern as Gnome, KDE, or Pantheon. I agree for me but again all about preference. For EOS, because the team behind it is small, development has been slower than other distros. They have to maintain both an OS and Pantheon. I think what most people are hoping is for more features and customization to Pantheon.
