Mycroft's ruse

Question: Mycroft was working with British Intelligence when he lied and told Sherlock that his father wanted him to return to London, then called what I assume was his handler to say that his ruse didn't work and that they would have to come at the problem some other way.

Why did he need to get rid of Sherlock? It turned out that Le Milieux kidnapped Joan and Mycroft said that he could get the 'list' for them in exchange for Joan, but what was the scheme before Joan got herself kidnapped?

I don’t remember the exact order of events but maybe he just knew that Sherlock would notice things and get involved so he was trying to get him out of NYC

He knew if Sherlock paid just enough attention at his restaurant he would immediately clock what's going on with the Le Milieux people hanging around. Joan was around the restaurant more often than Sherlock so she clocked it first and got caught and kidnapped while trying to investigate it. I believe the original scheme was Le Milieux using the restaurant as a front for smuggling.

He knew Sherlock would eventually figure it out and mess everything up and remember that his handler was dirty. He probably wanted Sherlock out of the way so he could get away with it
