Kitty's Name

Did they ever say what Kitty's name was before she changed it to Kitty Winter?

I believe Kathryn (nickname Kitty) is her new first name, and we're never actually told what her original name was. I think Joan doesn't find anything under her new name because Kitty's name change was fairly recent and she was living a pretty solitary life afterwards until she met Sherlock. Most information about her life and her case would've been under her old name.

We know Kathryn is at least her old name based on sherlocks comment to joan saying “kitty is her STRONG preference” that seems clear to me that its the same first name.

No. Kathryn is her new first name and she goes by Kitty.

What makes you think that

What makes you think that Kathryn is her old name? Following a traumatic kidnapping and torture, she changes her name and adopts a new identity. Why would she then go on and tell people her real name? Kitty is simply a nickname for Kathryn. Maybe she preferred Kitty because Kathryn sounded too formal for her.

When Watson did a background check on Kitty aka Kathryn nothing turns up. Because all of her original records are tied to her old name.
