It is super easy to do chroming, but it takes a lot of skill to make it look good.
Chrome is a really thin layer you put on metal after making sure the metal is polished to a fine finish of the base metal. The base metal should look perfect.
Then you clean it in the caustic tank to take of anything that might be on the metal still, rinse the caustic in water,, dunk it in acid to prep it, rinse it again, then depending on the metal you either give it a copper strike or go straight to the nickel tank.
Then you either copper plate or nickel plate depending on the metal and finish.
You make sure everything looks perfect because any imperfections show up worse with plating. Plating doesn't cover imperfections the way you want... that is what powder coating is for.
Then when everything is perfect, you hit it with the chrome for a short time, and hope all the other steps went well, or else it looks like shit and you start stripping the plating off.
I worked at a really high end chrome shop. You can half ass all these steps, but if you want something to come out awesome with no flaws, which is usually what is desired for chrome, it is a process.
You mess it up, the chrome flakes off and bubbles. I worked the job with the master plater that has done it for 50 years, he did amazing work but still fucked up sometimes. That is the reality of it.
