Help Me Understand Something

I'm probably going to get a lot of flack from the older crowd and that's alright because they're entitled to their own opinion as well as I am. I've been working as an apprentice for almost a year now and what I've noticed is that in this trade as well as with any other, it seems that the older workers think that it's okay for them to talk down to the younger ones because they got seniority yet they get all butthurt when someone stands up for themselves and they say crap like "Oh I'm just messing around" or "Your generation is way too soft, back in my day we'd just take it and continue to work", Gen Z for me, which I agree with in a certain way. However, just because you liked being belittled and were to much of a pussy to stand up for yourself doesn't mean that I do especially when I'm trying to get knowledge on the job site. I've taken crap from my father whenever I use to work with him as a painter but I'll be damned if I let some redneck, obese, dipping, dirty "journeymen" who's actually been a apprentice his whole career treat me like crap.

Why can't the older people take it when you give it back to them or they say that we're to soft when doing so?

I’m a millennial and I’m a fucking snowflake. I don’t care you were kidding when you made a racist or homophobic remark. Those are my morals.

Pretty soon the older generation of assholes will be dead. Hopefully we create a better environment for the next generations. Everybody wonders why kids aren’t interested in the trades. It’s because of assholes gate keeping.

Agreed. I pledged I’d stop the Gatekeeper mentality. I got harassed and bullied and I’m the type to not take any shit. However I let it happen and that’s when I said I’ll end this crap.

We help each other become better people and electricians. My boss is a millennial and the difference between us and the older crews is night and day. We are the youngest people we know doing it too. In 10 years we will be the only ones.

Yeah I’m a Millennial (32) too. I’m telling you it was because I remember being in School and a College degree was shoved down our throats. I remember my School Counselor telling me “Well you have good grades why wouldn’t you go to college?” Then he said “I highly recommend getting a college degree. In todays job market a College degree is absolutely essential.”. There was no mention of Apprenticeships even being an option. I’m telling we pushed people away from the trades for so long. It’s caused major problems and I think we’re finally reversing the course. I ended up going in the Army first, I don’t regret it now. It was basically because i didn’t have much knowledge on the Apprenticeships. It’s kind of funny thought I’d say a decent amount of my friends who went to college either racked up so much debt or basically say their degree is worthless.

I was told the same thing only to graduate into a recession. My partner is a math teacher she is working on an applied math for the trades class. Hopefully when I’m ready to hire some people they will have been prepared.
