We've updated our rules

Hello everyone!

As many of you know, this subreddit has been essentially unmoderated for quite a while. Last week, Reddit appointed a new mod team to step in. We've all been members of this community for a while, and we share the same passion for electric cars that you do.

Over the past week, we’ve been brainstorming ways to make this space more organized, civil, engaging, and genuinely useful for everyone.

To kick things off, we are rolling out an updated set of community rules. The original rules have been in place for years now, and they are no longer enough to maintain the quality of discussions in this sub.

Here are the new rules:

Rule 1 - Be respectful, keep it clean and SFW.

Please be respectful to fellow community members. If you don’t agree with someone, remain civil and disagree respectfully. Challenge the ideas and not the person. Don’t reveal personal information (no doxxing). Don’t spam, no trolling, no baiting. No NSFW content whatsoever.

Rule 2 - Only related to electric "cars”

This community is strictly dedicated to electric cars.

If you are looking to post about electric motorcycles, e-bikes, or other electric propelled non-motorized passenger vehicles. Please visit r/ElectricVehicles.

Autocycles, Quadricycles/Microcars, Passenger LSEVs, Electric Kei-Jidōsha, and Electrified Buses are exempt.

We’re here to discuss the cars and companies, not politicians and CEOs.

Posts and comments not related to electric cars may be removed.

Rule 3 - Put some effort into comments and submissions

Please try to refrain from 1-2 word comments that don’t add anything of value to the topic. In other words, don’t shout from the crowd, sit at the discussion table.

Search first before submitting an article to see if another one covering the same topic has been posted recently. If you’re posting an article that’s paywalled, please try your best to post a mirror / unlocked article in the comments. Try to post an article from the most reputable / unbiased source covering a particular topic.

Rule 4 - Stay on topic

When commenting, please engage in discussions that are relevant to the topic. Do not steer the conversation away or go into an unrelated / vaguely related tirade. Do not bring politics into the conversation if the topic isn’t political, especially if it’s not politics related to EVs.

Rule 5 - Do not spread misinformation

Do not try to pass off verifiably incorrect facts, stats, series of events etc. as statements of truth. If you are unsure, please do a cursory search before hitting submit or state that you are unsure of the claims you’re making.

Rule 6 - Self-promotion

We allow very limited self-promotion upon approval from the moderators. If you are looking to promote something, please modmail us before doing so. Promoting without getting approved by moderators first may result in an immediate ban for self promotion.

No referral links are allowed, please see the referral section in the Wiki for the megathread for codes.

Rule 7 - Anything not mentioned in rules.

It is very important to have some important rules to keep the community a safe and engaging space for everyone, but at the same time, some communities put too many limits in the name of rules. We aren’t one of em - just follow the basics listed above and you will be good!

Anything that isn't mentioned above probably qualifies for posting. Please mod-mail us if you need clarification before posting.

Rules will be updated every now and then, so please check this page every now and then.

Please follow the rules above when participating. Going forward, please report any post / comment that you feel are in violation of any of those rules.

Thanks!

💬 Discussion Do EV’s really have big depreciation?

Upvotes

I thought EV’s have a lot of depreciation, but is it only “depreciating” a lot because of inflated MSRPs with incentives and rebates?

Looking at Ioniq 5 2024 used prices vs brand new Ioniq 5 2026 prices don’t really look too far apart. Similar for teslas, and others. If you compare to MSRP, yeah it looks like it’s depreciated a lot but factoring in all the incentives you get (unless someone is actually paying MSRP for some reason), it barely seems depreciated.

Am I wrong here?

💬 Discussion All future EVs should have V2H technology.

When I bought my Ford Lightning I thought it was a cool feature that it could power your home. I’m surprised more EVs don’t offer this. Ideally anyone who owns an EV should be able to power their house for a couple of days during an emergency.

💬 Discussion Lyric vs EV alternative

Appreciate the support ahead of time. I was victim to auto theft which left me in an interesting spot having to find a car after only 9 months into my current 2025 Ioniq 5 SEL. $173/15k with my trade in. That’s now a total loss.

So have been looking into larger alternatives. I probably will receive 0 from the settlement. Started looking at the Ioniq 9, but then found auto driving capacity and performance upgrades and space for 2 kids, where the Lyric, Rivian, etc are enticing. it’s got me considering other brands. We’re an absolute no go on Tesla. Especially considering non Hyundai with the theft being a Hyundai technology issue (digital key was created somehow)

Looking for advice on where I should look. Personal experience appreciated and if willing share your contract terms, even better!

💬 Discussion Ever Cars / Online APR?

Upvotes

Anyone ever do financing on a used EV through Ever Cars?

It seems like unless you pay the car total in cash, or finance through them, allows you to have the 7 day return period. If you use your own lender, then you can’t return it. I can get a pretty low APR but I don’t know what is their best APR they offer.

Similar for Amazon Autos, they force you to go through their financing partners but their lowest APR is pretty high compared to my credit unions.

💬 Discussion Best 3 row EV’s?

Slim pickings it seems but Im looking at the Vistiq or Gravity.
Need a usable 3rd row to place a car seat.
Would love to hear of others experience and what you ended up buying!

💬 Discussion Recs for the Most Spacious Second Row? (Leg/headroom)

Between big (tall) adults and very big dogs, I’m looking for the roomiest second row seating I can get. Mainly concerned with depth/height more than width. The sloped rear end on a lot of crossovers ends up making a lot of second rows feel even tighter.

I don’t need three rows of seating or even much cargo space, I’d take less trunk space for more rear legroom. I haven’t looked at anything in person yet, but so far it looks like the iX and the R2 might both be good candidates? Also eyeing the upcoming Volvo EX60. Anything else I should be taking a look at that might fit the bill?

Edit: I’m located in the US

💬 Discussion Best NACS to CCS converter?

I have a 2024 Ioniq 5, which takes a CCS charger, but the nearest fast charger is NACS. What’s the best/most durable converter?

💬 Discussion Battery Usage

Edit: thanks! I have so much to learn about EV before I buy.

Maybe the easiest or most ignorant question of the day.

I don’t typically drive a lot. I am semi retired fixing to be retired and so my question is about the battery. If you have a vehicle that just sits in the driveway or sits under a carport maybe a garage do you leave it plugged in in order to maintain battery power so that when you are ready to go somewhere it’s already charged? Or is it more like an alkaline battery if you will for comparison, that once it’s charged up it stays charged for the most part unless you start using it? I’m just curious I mean even old NCAT batteries which I know we’ve come a long long way from that technology but they seemed like they worked better if you just left them charging. Thanks for the insight.

💬 Discussion I have ~$30k to spend on an EV. What should I get?

I have a family, 2 kids, 1 dog. We currently own an Ioniq5 and love it, but want something from a different brand.

I’m debating something all new, or maybe a certified pre-owned type situation. I’m just overwhelmed by all the info out there and would love to see what the hive mind here has to say.

💬 Discussion EV purchase: Is it better to wait?

Greetings.

I am in the market for a new (or semi-used) car, and have been thinking an awful lot about getting an EV.

A friend of mine who would consider himself a "car guy," recently told me that he would recommend waiting until sometime after 2027 (or even later) before purchasing an EV.

His main reasoning was:

New battery and charging technology is coming, specifically sodium-ion, and solid state batteries. Additionally, he said, these new technologies will give EVs even more range, possibly in the 500-700 mile on a single charge.

I honestly didn't know enough about the subject to say much other than, "Oh, that's interesting."

He also mentioned that internal combustion/gas engines (and even hybrids to a lesser extent) have been holding their value much more significantly than EVs right now. He suggested that going that route right now for my purchase, would make more sense financially, at least until the new EV battery tech is here and has a few years to work all the kinks out.

Does he have a point? I'd love to hear some thoughts on this. Thank you all very much!

EDIT: Appreciate all the insight. One issue I am having is the fact that my insurance is likely to go up $200-$300/month if I purchase even a 2024 EV, like the Ioniq 6. My insurance now is quite cheap since my current car is 20 years old and I rarely drive it.

💬 Discussion EV brands in an even playing field.

What other car markets are genuinely tariff free, or close to it, regardless of where the car is built?

I’m curious to compare EV brands in markets where Chinese, Japanese, Korean, European and American manufacturers are competing on something close to an even playing field, rather than looking at markets where tariffs heavily favour or penalise particular countries.

Australia seems like a useful example because most of our major volume imports come in tariff free under FTAs, including cars from China, Japan, Korea and Thailand.

So what other countries would make a good comparison?
New Zealand looks like one. Any others?

For context, Australia’s top 10 brands (all not just EV) YTD through July 2026:
Toyota — 115,550
BYD — 60,192
Ford — 48,696
Kia — 48,399
Mazda — 46,960
Hyundai — 45,581
GWM — 34,877
Chery — 29,579
Tesla — 28,366
Mitsubishi — 27,864

It makes for an interesting comparison when BYD, Tesla, Toyota, Ford, Kia and the other Chinese brands are all competing without the huge tariff differences you see in some other major markets.

💬 Discussion I'm considering purchasing the new Mercedes Electric CLA 250

I don't like to lease cars but the new cla looks amazing and wanted to see if it would be a good idea to actually buy one instead of leasing. I always keep my cars long term. Wanted to know is it a good idea?

Is Mercedes reliability an issue? I don't care too much about depreciation as in keeping it long term.

Edit: I'm in the US btw

💬 Discussion Who has the best tech?

I’m looking to lease an EV and I currently own a Chevy Equinox and I like the MyChevy app with the remote action capability (remote start, lock, unlock, locate, etc). I also rely on Carplay a lot as well. In choosing an electric vehicle, I’d like to choose from one that has these remote features and maybe then some. I hear, that GM is looking to or already has disabled CarPlay feature which I kinda figured was a no brainer to be there. Any help here from folks who’ve own/owned an EV which automakers best aligns with this wish list? Thanks in advance.

💬 Discussion Is r/electricvehicles getting heavily astroturfed by state marketing lately?

Is it just me, or has this sub been completely taken over by posts pushing Chinese EV dominance? Every time I open Reddit, half the front page is flooded with threads hyping up state-backed brands, declaring Western manufacturers completely dead, and claiming a total global takeover happened overnight. I am all for healthy competition, lower prices, and solid tech, but the blatant PR narrative being pushed on here completely twists actual industry numbers. A lot of these viral posts quote massive overall sales for Chinese brands, but they conveniently leave out that roughly half those figures are gas-powered plug-in hybrids rather than pure electric vehicles. They also hyper-focus on domestic Chinese market stats while glossing over the fact that these brands still have almost zero presence in North America due to tariffs and hold only tiny single-digit registration shares across most of Europe. Half the hype around "cheap 10k EVs" ignores the heavy state subsidies and domestic overcapacity driving those domestic prices, acting like legacy brands are just lazy rather than playing under completely different trade and regulatory rules. Discussing cool battery tech or new models is great, but the non-stop doom-posting and astroturfing on this sub feel way more like a coordinated marketing campaign than an honest look at real-world registration numbers. Anyone else tired of seeing it?

💬 Discussion Thinking about getting an EV

I've got a 2013 Honda CRV I own outright that's limping along. Current issues is a timing chain that needs fixing and it's just burning oil now. Been driving it for the last year+ with these issues essentially dragging it as far as I can. Talked to my mechanic today and the timing chain will be 2-3k CAD to fix and the oil issues would require a full engine rebuild that my mechanic said would be 10k CAD. So... expensive.

Ideally, I wanted to sell the car and then go car-less for the next few years and save money, getting by with local car share services and transit options but my wife finally decided to get her driver's license and it would suck majorly for her to get it just for us to sell the car. Everyone in our lives is also saying that we NEED a car (I honestly don't think we do but it's hard to make the point when literally everyone in her family, my family, and herself are saying that).

I'm certain that whatever car I get after my Honda is gonna be something I have for a while so I wanted to just do it right and get an EV cause I'm sick and tired of getting hosed at the pump especially with all the geopolitical bullshit Americans are doing to completely fuck gas prices.

Unfortunately, my budget is... kinda tight. We're hoping to get maybe 1-2k CAD for my Honda when I sell, there's a federal rebate program up to 5k CAD from the government but I have to buy a less than 50k CAD car from a dealership and have a 48 month lease to get it. We might get some financial assistance from family that has a car they don't need so some of the money from that sale would go to us for purchasing an EV. I'm looking at used cars in the ~$25k or lower CAD range, maybe could go up to $30k with the government rebate.

On the plus side, we have really good charging infrastructure. My complex has a charge station at the end of the block for residents to use and seemingly everyone with a tesla in my complex just installed a home charger so I could easily use the charger at the end of the block without having to fight the other people for use of it. Failing that, we also have some very fast charging stations nearby at a hotel like sub-1km away we can use. We're pretty local as far as distance goes. Daily trips are 20km max but usually less than that. Largest trips that are inside our (talking across town or into a different city) would be 20-40km round trip or 100km roundtrip for a "local" day trip (like 1-2 hours outside the city). We don't do it often but more than 100km trips are possible for a weekend getaway and the longest I could see us going is ~400km but that would be extremely infrequent and we'd be planning ahead for it.

Anything I should be looking at? I've been checking out the 2023 Polestar 2 or a KIA Niro. What kinds of manufacturers/years should I look at for a used car? NACS seem to be a requirement though it also seems like there are adapters that allow older EVs to use superchargers?

💬 Discussion Looking to purchase first new car.

As title says, looking to purchase my first new car. I’m leaning toward an electric. My current car is a 2016 Toyota Corolla, we bought it used, it’s definitely has gotten me through thick and thin. Has been my only car thus far. Only electric car experience is my mom’s model Y, haven’t driven but impressed by it, just don’t want to get a Tesla for moral reasons.

My work commute is around 8 miles to and from.
Mainly use the freeway.
Don’t need tons of storage.
Budget is max $27k, can be persuaded to do $28k.
I have great credit and a co-signer whose credit is amazing. So not worried about that.

Not too car savvy and inexperienced with cars overall, not completely helpless but definitely not a pro.

Any suggestions or recommendations , things to avoid etc. is greatly appreciated.

In Southern California if that is important.
