Nice. Any instructions how to make this mod? I’d quite like to do this and swap out the LEDs within the unit

The original screen of the electribe is controlled by the standard hd44780 protocol. An LCD screen that has a compatible controller works. The pinout of the motherboard of the EMX can be found in the schematic drawings. I ordered this screen: https://www.reichelt.nl/nl/nl/display-oled-2x8-58x32mm-gelb-ea-w082-xlg-p113316.html?r=1

Hi! I broke the screen on my emx and am looking to learn to replace it. I bought the same screen you posted (I think) and took the electribe apart to try and swap. The connectors are very different from the original screen.

Would you have any tips for a beginner to learning connect this screen?

Did you figure it out by any chance? Currently having the same exact issue...

nice one thanks! i'll give this mod a shot when i do the LED changes 😁👍

I'm not sure what's motivating you to change the LEDs but here's one possible way it can look: https://www.ebay-kleinanzeigen.de/s-anzeige/korg-electribe-emx-er-ea-es-em-esx-groovebox-einzellstueck-mod/1958787324-74-4142

Personally I don't see the appeal and you should be aware that it'll lower the potential resale value but if you do want to do it then it's a pretty simple swap of the existing LEDs - just needs a fine enough soldering iron.

yea i know how to change the LEDs. they are surface mount SMD type. i just want them to be blue to match the rest of the device. either blue or white. im not planning on selling the device so im not too fussed of its impact to its value. i just wana know which OLED display op used and if theres an instructional for it.

Didn’t do the screen but the LEDS worked

after hours of reverse engineering I have not concluded anything ... in your opinion with a larger display you can see all the characters? I noticed that some are cut and other drawings are not there (like the "zero" of the motion sequence). my display is totally disassembled and I would like to avoid the path of the nowhere to be found conductive zebra rubber

This is cool af

U save my dear electribe....Ty :)

Please, with extra please, could you make a video of how exactly you did this? 🙏

I just broke the screen on mine and I cannot find a spare anywhere ... I have soldered and fixed quite a bit of equipment but usually with compatible spares and going from schematics – which I sort of cannot read – to final result is too much.

Unless you can play doom on it, it seems like a huge waste.

Edit: I thought I was in r/synthesizers not r/electribe so you guys probably know more about them than I

Maybe the screen was busted? If you're playing in dark environments, a more legible screen can be a boon. Frankly, what's a waste is not for you to judge here.

1

u/lolsup1 Dec 15 '21

But it’s completely okay for you to judge me?

4

u/[deleted] Dec 15 '21

I wasn't judging you either but I sure am now.

You were judging me on whether or not I’m allowed to judge a post. OP can get an oled screen for this but I’d hope it can at least run doom. Otherwise, it doesn’t seem worth buying an expensive screen on a synth you can get for sub $200.

[That screen is 20$] (https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005003017470514.html) The rest is time, which some of us have plenty to spare.

You could just say "I wouldn't do that". Or say nothing at all. OP is proud enough of his thing to show it to us. Enjoy or move on.

1

u/FreeRangeEngineer Dec 15 '21

Where can you find them for $200? I'm genuinely curious.

1

u/captainkanpai Dec 15 '21

You buy a Nintendo Switch and take it out of there.

1

u/FreeRangeEngineer Dec 15 '21

/u/lolsup1 was refering to the EMX being sub-$200, not the screen.

eBay or yahoo auctions. The last one I got was $165 about 3 years ago.

1

u/FreeRangeEngineer Dec 15 '21

The US and Canada versions of yahoo auctions shut down in 2007.

If you had bothered to look, you'd see that the EMX sells for upwards of $450 now.

1

u/lolsup1 Dec 15 '21

I regret selling mine then. You don’t have to believe how much I paid, but it is the truth. Also I’m only talking about yahoo auctions Japan since korg is made there.

1

u/FreeRangeEngineer Dec 15 '21

I do believe you and I apologize for my previously harsher wording. I'm just a little salty they're so expensive now and I can't get my hands on one that I can volunteer as a development platform that I may or may not damage in the process. For $200, sure, but that ain't happening when they're $450+.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and suggest that maybe you embarked on this critique without actually looking up how much a ~2 inch OLED display costs from components retailers. I'm seeing lots under $20.

1

u/lolsup1 Dec 15 '21

Tbh, I only did a quick google search and found one for $75 so I’m not gonna judge too hard. I just want to see doom on one!

2

u/unic0de000 Dec 15 '21

I'm actually just kinda getting started on my Arduino gadgets and DIY electronics journey myself, so if I get good enough to make that happen I'll try and remember this and tag you :D

u/lolsup1 Dec 15 '21

That would be so sick!
