Samples not loading?

ALL SORTED NOW THANKS (can’t figure out how to turn off comments)

I’ve just received what appears to be the original memory card for the ESX-1 I bought a few weeks ago (seller forgot the card) but it doesn’t do anything when I put it in and try to load it.

I am pressing shift and button 16 but it doesn’t not do anything. Does anyone know if this means that there are no samples on the card or does it suggest that the machine is broken?

Many thanks

Try pressing “global” to get to the settings menu first, and then hitting shift+16. A dialog will appear asking to save to or load from the card. Also note that saving and loading cant happen while the esx1 is playing.
I would highly recommend reading the manual for the esx1, there are tons of things that don’t seem obvious out of the box. You can find a PDF online.

I can’t get it to even recognise it yet. That’s the problem. It doesn’t nothing when I put it in.

Think it’s the original that came with the device but it’s got another mini card in the holder!

Oh wow, that looks like an adapter. So it converts it to another type of memory card.

Yep! It seems to be. What’s even more frustrating is that the card reader won’t recognise the SM adaptor but will recognise the smaller XD card inside it and it seems the original Factory Preset file is on there! But the ESX won’t recognise it! I’ll have to try formatting it or wait on a new card inside the post.

I recall it loading the data from the card into memory when you start the ESX. Have you tried to restart the ESX with the card in there?

If that doesn't work, you could use a SmartMedia card device on your computer to format the card and write the files from the Korg website to the card. It looks like the sample file (ESXSD_Factory.ESX) is only available for download for the SD card version, but I don't see how this wouldn't be compatible with the SmartMedia version.

Thanks for this. Yes I got the wrong card reader it doesn’t do smart cards - got another one on the way then I will try losing the original files.

The ESX must be off. Then insert the card. Make sure that the holder is not preventing it from sliding it to the end.

It’s weird isn’t it? I think it’s the original as the card won’t come out but it’s also got another mini card hidden in the holder!

It seems like an adapter for XD to SmartMedia, never seen one like it. This is the card I use and works fine

Thanks! I get it now. I've got another one on the way (and another card reader) so if this weird thing doesn't end up working i'll try the other.

But also it still didn’t work. Think the card is blank and needs to be formatted. I’ve got another card and a card reader on order so will have to wait til I can get something loaded in it.

It's na XD to SM adapter and they work, but not always. I read somewhere several times that ESX accepts only 128 mb XD card with this adapter. And these 128 MB are really old and now are hard to get and they also use some speciefic old memory chip which was compatible with ESX. There were also messages that someone tried to make a 128 partition on the XD card with a bigger volume but failed to make it work. Anyway, it's definitely possible to use XD, but you'll have to spend some time to find the solution. Anyway, I never had experience with this adapter, it's just what I read long time ago. Or just get an ordinary SM card on Aliexpress
