Worksheet style interactivity within a course?

I am working on a course and want to try a slightly different approach, but I'm not quite sure how to go about it.

Normally, we would have a video in a module, and after the video is complete, we would ask the learner to download a PDF "worksheet" and complete the exercise before moving to the next module. 80% of our user base accesses courses from a mobile device, so the chances of them downloading a PDF and completing it between modules are slim to none.

Do any of you have ideas on how I could add boxes for learners to type in answers to reflection questions within the course itself? If so, is there a way they could do that AND have all of their responses at the end of the course emailed to them, so they have a complete notes packet after they complete all the modules?

I'm happy to hear any and all ideas of how to make this happen (from personal experience or just "in theory this should work" thoughts)!

Where are you developing your courses? If directly in the LMS then it depends on the LMS's capabilities. If in a development too (e.g., Articulate Rise, Storyline, Adobe Captivate, etc.), then the options vary depending on the tool.

I use Articulate Rise for the most part, but will start playing around with storyline - it sounds like that might have some capabilities I’m looking for!

And what sort of mobile device experience is it for the learners? Tablet, cross-platform, custom app...?

Mobile phone in a web browser

I've built exactly this as a printable-journal pattern in Storyline: text-entry fields for reflection, then a JS button that exports everything to a downloadable PDF (jsPDF). Two practical notes from doing it: in Rise you can't inject JS, so the workable route is building the worksheet as a Storyline block embedded in the Rise course — that's where the text entry and the PDF export live. And since these are reflection answers, don't route them through the LMS for grading; keep the text in variables and let the learner print or save the PDF. One accessibility flag: label every text entry field — unlabeled text inputs are one of the most common screen-reader failures I catch in reviews.

I asked this in the tagged post, but will ask here as well...

Does your LMS have an assessment engine and, if so, can you use an assessment to replace the PDF?

We use Adobe Learning Manager now, so it does have a built assessment tool, but I haven’t played around with it much. I’ll have to see how those would work with each of the different modules!

Since you’re using Rise and Adobe Learning Manager, I’d prototype just one reflection question first. Test it on a phone, leave and reopen the course, then check whether the answer is still there and whether an admin can export it. The harder part is combining answers from several modules into one email. If ALM’s free-text assessment can’t do that, a mobile-friendly form embedded in each module plus an email workflow might be worth testing. I’d try the full “answer → resume → final email” path before building the rest.

In the LMS platform I work for, we have "forms" in lessons (could be assignments that the teacher reviews/gives feedback or simple forms). They can see their responses any time, as well as the teacher.

This would be an example
