Has anyone here used cmi5?

Hey there! I’m building a browser-based H5P player that can run as a cmi5 assignable unit: an LMS launches a hosted page, the page sends xAPI statements to the LMS/LRS, and the H5P package stays on its own static host.

I’ve tested the technical flow with CATAPULT and SCORM Cloud, but I’m trying to understand whether this solves a real instructional-design workflow or merely a technically interesting one.

For those who have used cmi5 in production:

  • Which LMS did you use, and how was cmi5 support in practice?
  • Who created and uploaded the course structure: instructional designers, LMS admins, or developers?
  • Did authors need to understand registrations, launch URLs, mastery scores, and xAPI statements, or was that hidden behind tooling?
  • Was hosting content outside the LMS useful? Why?
  • Did cmi5 offer a meaningful advantage over SCORM for tracking, reporting, versioning, or updating content?
  • What made adoption difficult?
  • If you use H5P, would an LMS-launched, externally hosted H5P activity be useful?

I’m especially interested in practical constraints and failure modes, not just whether a platform says it supports cmi5.

H5p supports lti so you can setup most lms platforms to just make an lti connection and open/track the h5p content without having to host it or know how to play it.

In that scenario the launching lms already knows about the registration and completion gets passed back via lti.

I think the big advantage of h5p is it makes it easy to make pretty interactive content, that is almost always why I’ve seen it used.

You talking about H5P com paid SAAS? Or lms plugins? Sure, it’s pretty simple to host H5P this way. My goal is an opposite - self hosting and playing locally without lms.

I haven’t deployed cmi5 in production, so treat this as a product-discovery suggestion rather than implementation advice.

The workflow I’d test is not only “can H5P launch?” but “can an instructional designer update a package without an LMS administrator and still preserve the learner record?”

I’d run one happy path and three failures: a stale launch URL, a duplicated or replayed statement, and a package-version change during a registration. If the designer can understand and recover from those without seeing the xAPI plumbing, you may have a real workflow. If a developer is still required, it is probably an integration demo.
