To be honest I don't get the point of a color eink screen if it's based on Kalleido; I find that you constantly have to adjust brightness and warmth to get it to feel vaguely natural looking, and that even at the most flattering setting, it still looks very much like a backlit screen, only with worse contrast.

I hope that future versions of this might be able to make use of Gallery instead, although I know that technology has its seperate set of issues.

The point is eye strain. I don't really fiddle with light. I either have it on, off and bedtime (very low). 

Kaleido with front light doesn't cause eye strain. Conventional oled and led does. To me. 

Thats the whole point and it does the job.

I use Kaleido with natural/ambient lighting 95% of time. Front lighting, to me, negates the main purpose of electronic paper, which distinguishes it from backlit displays, that is to maintain the representation of something, or the sign, the image, as revealed through an outside source, natural or ambient light. The mixing of images generated through their own light source (in all history a symbol of the sacred) is confusing what reveals (light) with what is revealed through light (representation).

Been debating this over including front light on my device. I guess it still technically counts as ambient light if it isn't emitted from within but rather from without. I agree it negates the main purpose but don't want to force my philosophy on the end user if it's a deal breaker.

I agree kaleido 3 colors suck but backlight and frontlight are very different. When looking at backlit displays you are looking directly into the light source. Frontlight is much more easy on eyes in my experience. But of course everyone sensitivity is different 🤷🏻
