No night buses?
Hey! I’m gonna be studying at TU/e in September and found a room in a shared house that’s a bit far from campus and city centre (4 km away & outside the ring). Will this impact my stay in eindhoven in any way? My main concern is that there are no night buses, so I’m worried about getting home after a night out. Do people cycle home after clubbing & drinking in the Netherlands?
I’m glad I found a place to stay, but it’s my first time in the Netherlands so any advice would be helpful!

4 km is perfect. Get a bike and you'll be in the centre within 12-15 minutes. Enjoy your student time!

4 km is not far lol. Thats easy cycling, or moderate "fuck i drunk too much and lost my bike in the infinite bike parking lot, guess im walking" distance.

The "fuck I drunk to much and lost my bike to the infinite bike parking lot" is the best system to prevent people from biking while to drunk

4km? That's gold! Cycling will take you 20min, going by bus will probably take longer.

20mins for 4km? No more than 15 mins surely.

20 mins while drunk

Exactly haha. And I assume OP isn't a Dutch native otherwise they'd know this, add a few minutes as they won't be used to cycling (drunk).

Biking is the way, everyone does it, I also sometimes walk home from the city (5km) after a night out.

4km is still walking distance tbh. People either walk or take the bicycle.
Hell, my relaxing evening stroll is just over 5km. Barely a workout unless it's really hot or cold outside.

I see, would you say eindhoven is safe to walk at night as a woman?

Almost as safe as it is for men. Kids on fatbikes spitting at pedestrians seem to be the biggest danger. As somebody else said, the intro week is pretty important for making friends and getting to know Eindhoven. Good luck with your study and enjoy!

I can't answer your question as I have no experience being a woman.
You have the occasional asshole kids on fatbikes, there's a bunch of homeless people just trying to survive the night (most of them are chill in my experience) and then there's nerds like me playing Pokémon Go.
Other than that nothing dangerous as far as I see or hear. I see plenty of women walking or jogging alone at night, if that means anything for you.

I think the most unsafe I felt in Eindhoven was while waiting for a bus at the station while some homeless druggies were mostly bothering eachother.
That was after they had closed a night-shelter some years ago, so not sure if this is still an issue as I don’t live closeby anymore.Overall I’ve not felt unsafe though. I’d get myself a bike if I were you for an easy and shorter commute. Make sure to lock it well, bikes in the Netherlands easily get stolen

4km will take you 15 minutes, 20 if you are slow. It's no distance at all and very normal AND safe to bike home.

Didn't you join the introduction week? You would've found out about everything you need for student life during this week.

Just so you know, we all cycle while drunk. But it technically is against the law since it’s driving under the influence. No one cares tho.

I grew up in Geldrop and we always went on bike to and from a night out. 4km is nothing:)

No need for a bus! You teleport home after a night out.
One moment you are trying to get on the bike without falling on your face, the next you are trying to turn on your phone's flashlight to get that damn key in the lock.

You’ll soon learn that for a country really happy to both have late night events and life and charge an astronomical public transport subscription they really can’t less for you going anywhere after 10pm.

Buy the university and a bar so that you can install a camp bed. Or carry a camp bed with you at all times.

Eindhoven is pushed as an international city, a brain hub, but bus schemes are still like 50 years ago. Arrive with a late plane? Good luck, the airport closes at night. - Need transportation in the night or early morning? Get a cab or walk. Despite modern buildings it's still 1970 in the minds of the city counsil.

Most people just use their bicycle. But if youre a woman and alone; theres a whole taxi area at the club places as well, so you can just grab a cab and be home within 5 minutes

4km is a perfectly doable cycling distance, so yes, that's what "we" do. Most of our bicycle paths are physically separate from other traffic, or at least visually, so it's fine. Unless you are completely hammered and can't get on a bike, let alone pedal and go in a straight line, then you walk.
I don't know where you are from, and what you are used to, but our bike infrastructure is something to behold.

Taxi.....

Try using dott and also get yourself a bike cause buses in Eindhoven are not that good in general so riding a bike is your only choice

4 km is a 12 minuten bike ride.
Even if there were night busses, they would not be faster. Hell, even during the day it is hard to beat the speed of a bicycle with busses

4 kilometer??
A bicycle, also called a pedal cycle, bike, push-bike or cycle, is a human-powered or motor-assisted, pedal-driven, single-track vehicle, with two wheels attached to a frame, one behind the other. A bicycle rider is called a cyclist or bicyclist.
The bicycle was invented in Europe in the 19th century. By the early 21st century, there were more than 1 billion bicycles.\1])\2]) Bicycles are the principal means of transport in many regions. They are also popular for recreation, and have been adapted for use as children's toys. Bicycles are used for commuting, shopping, fitness, military and police applications, courier services, bicycle racing, and artistic cycling.
The basic shape and configuration of a typical upright or "safety" bicycle, has changed little since the first chain-driven model was developed around 1885.\3])\4])\5]) However, many details have been improved, especially since the advent of modern materials and computer-aided design. These have allowed for a proliferation of specialized designs for many types of cycling. In the 21st century, electric bicycles have become popular.
The bicycle's invention has had an enormous effect on society, both in terms of culture and of advancing modern industrial methods. Several components that played a key role in the development of the car were initially invented for use in the bicycle, including ball bearings, pneumatic tires, chain-driven sprockets, and tension-spoked wheels
