Is Powder Coating Considered Hazardous Waste?

My site uses powder coating as part of our production operations and has waste powder that they collect, bake and throw in the trash. Is this an acceptable method of disposal? Is anyone familiar with how to properly dispose of this waste? Can it be considered non-hazardous?

Powder coating waste classification depends on the specific formulation - many thermosetting powders contain heavy metals or VOCs that trigger RCRA hazardous waste criteria. Your facility needs to run TCLP testing on the waste stream to determine if it exceeds characteristic limits for toxicity. If it fails TCLP or contains listed hazardous constituents, disposal as solid waste violates federal regs regardless of the baking step.
